Remington Model 700 Safari

Anyone have any experience with the Remington 700 in the 458 load? Went to Africa 2 years ago and want to go back for Cape Buffalo. How does the .458 stack up against say .416 Rigby. Can you use 458 load on White Tail or would that be overkill?

Aside from this being the shotgun forum and this thread possibly being moved let me try and answer your questions.

The Remington 700 in 458 Win Mag is a great gun, but I have never had a 700 that gave me any problems.

The 458 Win Mag compares favorably to the much older 416 Rigby.

416 Rigby shoots a 400 Grain bullet at about 2,300 FPS

With these numbers, while the .458 shoots a heavier bullet, its like comparing apples to oranges.

I believe that either cartridge would work well on Cape Buffalo but the 458 does have an advantage. Check with your Guide/Professional Hunter and see what they say.

Can the .458 be used on Whitetail Deer - absolutely. But if there is anything such as overkill, this would be a classic example of that. If you are a handloader you could really down load this cartridge to make it more pleasant to shoot while hunting medium thin skinned game.

I've got some handloads for my Ruger 77 in .458 (a 405 grain bullet at about 1900 fps) that are like shooting a .22- the gun barely moves, but that load would hit a whitetail or a pig like crazy.
