Remington 870 bayonet lug

I 've seen pictures of military 870's with the bayonet lug attachment. Was this welded on, or some type of removable accessory?

The ones I've seen go on like a mag extension clamp. In fact, all the bayonet holders I've seen for 870's require a mag extension since the thing clamps to the barrel and the extension. It even uses the same little screws that the factory mag-clamp uses.

The first extended magazines were made by Remington as a military development project. The Remington extension has a lug on the end that extends past the muzzle. Most people don't know that this was the mounting point for a bayonet ring.
Remington never saw any reason to change the design, so it's still present on police and civilian extensions.

The magazine tube has a groove in it that serves as a locator for the magazine support clamp. The under side of the support has a hole that allows a sling swivel to be attached. But, this also was an attachment point for the locking lug for a bayonet. The lug could be attached to the clamp with a screw.

All that is necessary to mount a bayonet, is to purchase a Remington factory magazine extension, and to make up a lug that can be screwed or welded to the support clamp.

It uses the M-14 bayonet.

870s we had in the AF had an extension tube. The bayonet's "hilt thingy" fit over a "stud" at the end of the extension - look at it as a reverse of a counter bore ....

The bayo's end snapped into a regular lug which was, IIRC, part of a barrel band-thing.

Took the same bayonet as the M16 at the time.

Wasn't too into too much of that stuff at the time, but it was a mean looking SOB.
