Freakishly fast 06 load...I think.
Well my 2 shooting partners laid out the long dollar for some more Barnes bullets. They went with 30 caliber 130 gr Barnes TTSX boat tails. The load was shot out Winchester model 70 using W760 at 64 grs. IMO this would make a pretty darn good whitetail load. The 5 shot groups were about 1.5" at 100 yards using a solid rest and averaged 3246 ft/second. Also, the chrono showed three duplicate velocities.
This is published data, all though I don't have the source at hand and 64 grs was not the max charge. I just thought I would share a potential DRT load with everyone. Good luck and good shooting.

Sounds like a 7mm-08 to me, except the bullet's a little too light and a little too slow. (JK)
What's the barrel length?

Hey Peet, I"m not sure what my buddy's barrel length is but, I'm guessing 22" maybe 24". Our other partner shoots a Browning semiauto and was getting around 3000 ft/sec. Of course we let him know that he is denting cases upon ejection and losing velocity working his action. After what my 280 did to a deer using 120 gr TTSX and my buddy's 25-06 has done using 100 gr TTSX, I think that 130 gr is going to knock the fire out of mister whitetails hind parts.

I'd question the loading data. I don't find any data using that powder near that high. Even a 125gr bullet maxs out at 62.0 grs. Barnes does not show that powder and Hodgdon doesn't show that much powder with a 125 gr. I think your friends loads are considerably over max. Another issue they may run into, heat. WW760 is not known for being temperature friendly. What may have worked in the winter may blow up a nice rifle in the summer. I'd stand clear when they are shooting.
Some of the guys hunting South Texas where ranges can be extreme are using the 300 Win Mag with 125gr TNT bullets loaded at max. Sounds like it would blow up a deer size animal but at the extreme ranges they are hunting, bullet performance is great. But it does limit just how close they can shoot a deer. Most are shooting at 500+ yds. |

I'll see if I can find out where he got the data and post it. I know that when we reload we always use published loads. I don't want to give bad information. If there is a correction to be made, I will let everyone know.

Without knowing case capacity and COAL to be more exact, Quickload thinks that is slightly over a max load. However, even a slight increase in case capacity (which is very likely as QL seems always a little pessimistic) and a slightly increased COAL would bring it down to manageable levels.
If I set the COAL to 3.4 inches and up the case capacity to 69.00gr from the default 68.2, QL predicts 3198fps from a 22" barrel and 3267fps from a 24" barrel. The pressure is showing 59,415psi, which is essentially right at max (60,000psi). Regardless, it seems likely to be a slightly compressed load very near, or slightly over, max pressure. Tell your buddy to just get a 7mm-08 and then he can shoot 140gr bullets at 3300fps all day long.

A 7-08 shooting 140 pills at 3300'ps all day? Where oh where are you getting this magical powder from? The rest of us shooters are doing good to hit 2800'ps with a 7-08 and 140 gr bullets.

Ok, ok.... artistic license a little, maybe.
3200fps with 120s, 2900 with 140s. You can get 3400 with the 100s though.

I worked up a load for my 06 using Hornady 110V-Max's. I was getting a five shot average of 3712 f.p.s. I know it is a little lighter bullet wise. It was shooting 1" or under at 100 yards, and I still was under the max. No signs of presure at all. I was really surprized at how accurate they were. It was no target rifle or nothing like that. I could have pushed it a little more but figured they were accurate, and no problem so why bother? I know they will turn a porky pine into a red mist. I hope to get out for some yotes this fall, and see how they work on them. Hard part is seeing one.

One of my favorite coyote loads years back was 60.0 grs WW760 under a Hornady 110 gr HP. Yeah, red mist is right! No coyote out of the hundreds that fell to that 03 Springfield ever took a step. Bad news was that the primers were flat and brass life was less than 3 times thru the gun before the primers wouldn't stay in the pockets. No, I don't push any gun that hard anymore. Too many other ways to get speed out of a rifle or kill an animal.

I dont shot them that much now that I have the load worked up. I got the clicks marked from my deer round. So it should get me back on it pretty fast. If I do run into short case life etc. I will back them up. Your correct you dont need to push them real fast, what your shooting at will never know.

Thanks for posting the data. I talked with my buddy last night and that is exactly where he got the data.....right out of his new Barnes manual. I didn't mind the data being questioned. As I stated, I don't want to give bad information. I really think for our application, hunting 150 yards and in, this combo will absolutely fry a deer.
