Police Trade in 870Ps?

Anybody have a lead on any used Remington 870 Police shotguns? I can't seem to find any, they appear to have all dried up. I'm hearing bad things about the current 870Ps otherwise I'd just buy new. Apparently the old police trade ins are far better guns.

I am looking for a 4+1 model with the rifle sights and black stock.

And leads would be so cool right now. Thanks.

My early 80's vintage Wingmaster 870 has a 5 round tube. None of the 4 +1 silliness.
A barrel is a barrel. Any 870 barrel will fit any 870. Did that too.
There's nothing special about a "Police" either. Well, except the Parkerizing.

I bought a lightly-used 1970s Wingmaster a couple of years ago at a very good price. I'm not a bird hunter...so I had the barrel cut to 18 1/2" and sent the gun to: http://www.aiptactical.com/, who rebuilt it to Remington Police standards+ with upgraded springs, bolt, plus a beautiful, true parkerized refinish.

The difference in this gun and a stock Wingmaster (and remember that the Wingmaster, then at least, was Remington's "Cadillac") is absolutely amazing! It's a positive as a bank vault throughout the entire action. Zero slop, zero looseness, yet super-smooth. Everyone who has tried the gun goes wide-eyed at the feel of it. Plus the vent-rib is a useful feature.

I've had every kind of pump SD shotgun imaginable: Mossbergs, Winchesters, Ithacas. Remingtons, Benellis, etc. This one is the best of the lot, IMO. Granted, I spent about $350-400 over and above the cost of the gun. But, as the saying goes, you get what you pay for.

You may not want to go this route, but if you do, I highly recommend Aiptactical. The owner, J.D. McGuire, has been a Remington LE armorer for for a very long time and is an absolute professional to deal with.

There's nothing special about a "Police" either. Well, except the Parkerizing.

There is actually several differences. While I don't remember the link to the site listing all of them I do remember the trigger guard is metal vs plastic, the bolt is chromed, there are no MIM parts and better quality control.

Got my 870P at a LGS advertised as new when actually it had been sitting somewhere in the box for years because it wouldn't feed.

Remington was nice enough to fix it for me for free. Very cool shotgun.

Looks like they don't have any at the moment, but this company sells a lot of trade-in 870s. I've seen lots of happy customers talking about that over on AR15.com

Thanks all, I've just heard really bad things about all new 870s these days, even the police ones. I hear over and over they aren't as smooth and not even close to the same quality as the old wingmaster or police guns. Everyone says to get an LE trade in, just not so easy to find in the configuration I want. Thanks for the leads all.

Now that mine is fixed it's quite smooth. It's a 2012 BTW.

I have no idea what to do with it. But it's not every day you run across a "new" one at a gun store so I bought it.

Mine's a 2012 also, original owner. I shoot it a lot and it's very smooth.

Remington's website has a list of "differences" that apply to the 870P. I cannot name them all from memory but......

-the 870P is run on a special, exclusive, controlled production line by skilled senior employees
-the quality control checks are more frequent (?)
-at one time, the 870P used certain springs (mag tube, carrier dog, others?)
which were listed as HD (heavy duty) to enhance function.
- seems as I recall some enhancement with the extractor hook and the ejector riveting.

I'd have to look at the site for certain. And things certainly could have changed. But that is the way it used to be.

I'd agree a barrel is a barrel.
