American Pioneer Powder is Back in Business & Available

APP is now producing powder again after their plant explosion.
The powder with the original APP label is available for purchase from the following outfits: bulletsbyscarett.com, lg-outdoors.com and wholesalehunter.com.

It's also being sold under the Shooters World label @ grafs.com as Shooters World Multi-Purpose Black
(This Black Powder substitute is made in America for Shooters World by American Pioneer Powder).

Good to hear. I was a fan of Alliant Black MZ, supposedly relabeled APP.

I tried to be a fan of Black MZ in the 45 Colt cartridge. Chronograph testing showed it to give wide shot to shot variations in heavier loads. Loading it down made the 45 Colt quite wimpy. I'm back to Olde Eynsford but wish APP good luck because they have lots of fans.

I noticed that APP has started making .50 round pellets instead of only the square powder sticks.
That must mean that Hodgdon's patent on round pellets has expired.
It was that patent infringement that led to the original Clean Shot Powder company going bankrupt which led to the new name of American Pioneer Powder.
I wonder if they will make revolver pellets next?

Howdy

As far as I know, APP was around well before Black MZ.

I bought a pound of it years ago to use in some 38 S&W cartridges. The reason was APP does not require a Black Powder compatible bullet lube as some of the other subs do. I normally use SPG in all my Black Powder rounds, but I could not find suitable bullets for 38S&W that would hold enough lube, so I tried the APP.

It worked as advertised, clean up was easier than with real BP (which isn't all that bad anyway).

Just for fun I just looked up the safety data sheets for both APP and Black MZ. Almost identical. Both use 40-60% Potassium Nitrate (saltpeter) and 20-40% potassium perchlorate. The only difference seems to be that APP uses a tiny bit of charcoal, and Black MZ uses carbon black.

The American Pioneer .50 pellets are also sold by Graf's under the Shooters World label as The Hunter Pellets.
