Other than a pair of $30 handguard clip pliers is there anyother way to get the Springfield M1A's handguard retaining clip to fit over the handguard without scratching them up?

Chief Paul:
Apply a light (thin) coat of vaseleine or other light grease, in the entire slot, then push down on the clip.

This accomplishes two things. Makes it easier to get on, and later off, and also puts a little lube under the clip, to prevent rust

Harley,

Your method works sometimes, but sometimes it chops a big chunk out of the wood. I recommend buying or making the proper tool.
