.460 Rowland: 230gr @ 1,340 ft/s for 916 ft/lbs. 255 gr @ 1,100 ft/s for 685 ft·lbs. 10mm auto: 200gr. @ 1250 ft/s for 693 ft/lbs. 180gr. @ 1350fps/ 728 ft/lbs (10mm auto info from Doubletap) .45ACP: 230gr. @ 1010fps for 521 ft./lbs. - 5" 1911 (.45ACP info from Doubletap) I think that the 10mm auto has similar chance to stop a threat compared to the .45ACP. Simple energy numbers would suggest that the 10mm auto has a serious edge in "power" over the .45ACP. I was hoping for a .460 Rowland 250 - 255 gr load that could be fired from a 1911 sized pistol 5" barrel that achieved 1400fps.

I have never had a issue either with muzzle blast the only really externally noteable difference that I have noticed is my casings shoot out a but farther than 45 acp...
The power increase is sweet..

Not to be lazy, but I trust you guys more than google, so:
Can anyone tell me which is the best conversion kit (460 Roland) for a S.A. Loaded 1911 .45 ? I found a few online, but am not sure which is best... And does anyone make one for either the Glock G20 or the HK USP Compact .45? Thanks!

I have gained interest in the 10mm. I think it is a cool cartridge. My favorite is a 45ACP but the 10mm is a specialzed catridge. I would like to get either a Delta Elite or a S&W 1076. The 10mm would be fun to shoot and a nice option to have. The Delta would be sweet any one here shoot one.

Cool I heard the G20 is nice. Im more of a steel guy so probably would get the Delta. However I like Glocks and think they are good firearms.

The 460 Rowland lets you keep the 45 ACP in a uprated package...

I just put a Clark 460 setup together on a Caspian race-ready recon frame. The ammo provided is a 260 gr LBT,very wide meplat,At this point, this bullet is not feeding reliably.I have more work to do.It chronos 1250 fps.
I don't think most folks think in terms of .460 Rowland as a typical SD round. The 24 lb recoil spring in itself would have drawbacks for SD. I think the Clark brake delays unlocking, and helps make it work. On the accuracy question,a large part of 1911 accuracy is workmanship.Clark fitted his kit to the frame, and my brother, who owns the gun, asked me to fit a safety, and things took off from there. What Mr Clark put together is excellent. All it will need for accuracy is good ammo and someone who can shoot. |

Full power 10mm loads do have more recoil than .45ACP loads, but I trained to handle that. The Delta feels "right" in my hand compared to the 1076 which feels narrow and hard to the heel of my hand. Recoil is concentrated on the heel of the hand by the narrow grip of the 1076. I also prefer the trigger of the Delta compared to the 1076.

Thanks Mello2u, I planed on getting a Delta anyway. I like the all steel guns and didnt want a Glock. The two I like were the 1076 since i have a 5906 and like it and the Delta. I like 1911's way more than S&W's however and would stick with that. The 10MM would be a mean SD round. What loads do you carry for it usually.

Thanks OP for introducing me & others to this round, I picked up a 460 conversion kit too from Clark. Not to hijack this thread or anything...
Holy cow, the recoil spring sure made it tough to assemble! My thumbs are all raw...I might have to follow the alternate assembly instructions offered here next time: http://www.realguns.com/archives/106.htm Anyway, have yet to shoot it, will let you guys know how that goes...how does it look?

Looks good frontsight! With the increased slide velocity, are you guys running Wolff +10% mag springs? I'd also suggest an EGW square firing pin stop. That's one part that makes a noticeable difference and might allow you to decrease your recoil spring by several lbs. By engaging the hammer at a lower point, it slows the slide before the recoil spring even comes into play. The only downside is that cocking the hammer by racking the slide becomes more difficult. If you ever install this part in any of your 1911's, you'll never want to take it back out.

I would have suggested this one over a 10mm even though I like the 10mm.

Interestingly enough, the 1911 originally had a non-beveled FP stop. The bevel was a part of the "A1" refinements. The reason for changing to the beveled part was because of the complaints from GI's about it being to difficult to rack the slide against the hammer. You'll find that this part makes a noticeable difference.

Sorry to revive this dead thread, but for those of you that have the 460 conversion in XD and 1911, what has your experience been? How many rounds have you fired, how reliable has the gun been, and how many jams have you had? Are you happy with your conversion overall?
Thanks, Lucas |

I found this thread to be an interesting read. I have a Para GI Expert that is down at Clark's right now having a .460 Rowland barrel fitted. I got it in but it was too tight to function so I'm taking advantage of their free fitting service for their .460 kit. The gun will be getting more work done and plenty of parts changed when it returns. And I'll be posting a build/range report when it's finished.
Personally I'm interested in the lighter weight projectiles for this round, a 185gr bullet at 1550fps from a pistol is smoking. If I want big power I'll still go with my Automg V in .50AE, 300gr JHPs at 1500fps are nothing to sneeze at. .50AE next to a .45acp
