Q's on use of 1860 Henry in SASS matches...
Here's a good one...
Is it legal (or generally considered so) to use a properly sized piece of wooden dowel in the magazine of an 1860 Henry in order to keep the little button from coming far enough down the tube so you don't have to move your hand in a match? Not that I think speed would be an issue in frontiersman category. I would have asked this on the other thread, but I figured it was a major thread drift. After shooting a Spencer 3-band reproduction and having it not work right each time I tried to use it, the desire left me for one of those.

The "Henry hop"? That's a pretty common solution to the problem. SASS will allow it, but NCOWS might not.

It's legal in CAS... but it's still cheating.

Henry Problem
In the N-SSA there has been one or two incidents where a Henry magazine tube exploded while being loaded.
The problem seems to be when you have a reloaded bullet with the primer not fully seated in the primer pocket. The shooter drops in the bullet with the "High Primer" and then when he releases the magazine spring at the end of the loading cycle, it hits the column of bullets, setting off the cartridge with the "High Primer." This is usually followed by several other cartridges in the magazine going off. In other words, be sure that on your reloads, ALL of your primers are seated flush with the base of the cartridge and G-E-N-T-L-Y release the magazine spring. |
