Imr 4896 h4895 ??

Hello all you...You probably already know the question.....

According to the powder burn rate chart in the bacl
Lymans manual.These powders are listed side by side.

So,does this mean they are interchangeable?? I must have
picked up the H4895 by mistake...I want it for the 22-250

Never used any befor...SO,what can you tell me? Thanks so

Since Hogdon bought out the IMR line it has been said they are the same thing, still, do a normal load workup for your rifle to be safe.

Hodgdon has both powder listed on there web site. No, they are NOT the same.

243winxb is correct, they are not the same, IMR4895 is a tiny bit slower. Either the Hodgdon or IMR4895 powder is a good choice for your 22/250! William

Correct, they are NOT the same. But they are very close. H4895 seems to produce slightly higher pressures. IF you were going to use IMR4895 load date, minimum for H4895 will probably be about 5% reduction and work up from there.

EG: 42gr starting load for IMR4895 would lose 2gr to start H4895 (H4895=40gr.)

When I conducted some research in my American Rifleman collection, I thought I found when H4895 was introduced, and the ad said it was identical to IMR 4895.

That was a long time ago. Recently I talked to Hodgdon and H4895 is one of their extreme powders and is made in Australia.

However, the load data is close.

Something that is ignored is lot to lot variation of powders. The powders we buy are blended to, according to Accurate Arms, a 10% variation. That explains why reloading manuals always had different charge weights/max pressures for H110/W296 and HP38/W231. These were and are the same powders, but they were testing different lots.

My own testing of H4895 shows it gives me close, but not exact velocities as IMR 4895, for the same charges in 308.

Like any powder, develop your loads. Things are always weird for maximum loads.

Slamfire, I guess I blinked and everything changed. Often the same powder gets a different name from whoever happens to be selling it, for example both IMR 4064 and AA4064 are made in Canada (and I can only assume that both come from the same General Dynamic Land System factory, but it makes sense to me). Getting older is tiring.

IMR4895/36.0gr/96%Fill  --> 3,500fps
  H4895/35.0gr/93%Fill  --> 3,500fps

You get the picture -- different -- but either will do fine for what you want it for.

I believe you can use H4895 with IMR 4895 data but not IMR4895 twith H4895 data.

Not if H4895 is faster as mentioned above.

Data is easy enough to get. Why guess?
