30.06 for a friend

I'm loading up some 30.06 for a friend with components I have on hand to save him some money.

I can't test them as I don't have access to his 30.06

mixed brass

H380 powder

168gr Hornady A-Max bullets

CCI 200 Lg rifle primers

Here are the requirements:

Safe load without testing using the above mentioned components.

Although this is mainly a target bullet he will likely hunt small whitetail deer with it some.

I appreciate that these are far from Ideal parameters to work with. I know many of you mean well when you suggest other powder etc. Honestly I'm only interested in knowing if say 50 gn of h380 will "likely" be a good load within these parameters?

Reloading data center lists 51.0 gr as starting load, and 56.5 gr as max at 3.23" overall length using WLR primer. As the max load is only 49,700 CUP (~58,000 psi), loads at the higher end should be perfectly safe.

If it were me, I would load 55 grains with the 168 gr to 3.27" (the AMAX is a longer bullet) . . . IF, AND ONLY IF, his rifle is modern and safely fires factory loads.

If it were me, I would start with starting loads and I'd want to see the manual.

I would never load ammo for anybody else without that rifle in my hands.Besides the obvious, making sure everyhting fits and functions right, but I want to fire a couple of those loads myself. If something goes wrong ,I'd rather be pulling the trigger instead of someone else.Just a thought.

My load for 165 grain SST is:

H380 54.5 grains
CCI 250 primers

For the CCI 200s, I'd probably step it up to 55 grains.

What rifle? If it's a Garand you need to select a powder in the appropriate burn rate range. I think H380 is a bit slow for this.

Is the A-Max bullet appropriate for hunting deer?

In any case, I'd invite him to come over and put the loads together under your supervision. I try not to reload for others but have on occassion let others shoot my reloads.
