I have other .22s, but for plinking, my favorite is a SW 1948 K-frame.

S&W K17.
Have two of them in 6" One is old and shoots very good One is much older (1953 I was told) that shoots great but due to the deep rich bluing and very nice condition, I tend to not shoot it as much. My Ruger Single Six is good too but I prefer double action shooting.

I had a Ruger Single Six with dual cylinders. It was never miss for small game, great for plinking cans and other reactive targets. I sold or traded it at some point and it is always at the top of my list of guns I wish I hadn’t sold.

Agree about the Korth very nice.
For me it is a Smith 617 and a GP100. I go back and forth as to which one I like better. The Smith has a better trigger and a tad more accurate . The Ruger balances better and the fiber optic sights are easier to pick up. Since you said "plinking " I'll say the GP100. |

Plinking suggests fast double action shooting, my favorite. From 1969 Korths have a bearing that makes double action extremely smooth when it is properly adjusted.
A trigger job should never be reduced to changing springs, the resistance also depends on friction. A revolver that is that well finished inside, does not need any work. ![]() |

Right now the best is Charter Arms Pathfinder. Have an H&R Sportsman but having problems since a round exploded at the rim. Recently bought a p17 and it works great not even one misfire in about 200 rounds. But it’s not accurate, over a 4” group at 60 feet with gun rested on top of ammo box. The Charter Arms is less than 2”. Hoping it just needs to break in.

What is the reasoning for the shrouded spring? Seems unnecessary.

Another vote for the H&R 999.

more Rugers
I've got my Dad's Single Six, but it's not really a plinker as I installed the .22 WMR cylinder shortly after Dad's passing and .22WMR has gotten very expensive. But for a light duty woods revolver, it serves well and provides more punch for pests than .22lr. With its longer barrel, (5-1/2"?) I shoot it a bit better than other handguns with shorter barrels.
The .22 revolver I enjoy shooting, but find extremely hard to shoot well, is another Ruger, a Bearcat. A little gem, but with skimpy grips and worse sights. |

It used to be my 4" Model 17; it was manufactured in the early 80s. I have lost count of the number of headshots made while taking small game; it was something in the neighborhood of 50. Two recent acquisitions stand to give it a run for the money: a mid-1930s K-22 Outdoorsman 6" with a U-notch rear sight and a bead front; and a Korth 6" Sportsman revolver with a convertable cylinder in .22 WMR (half-lug barrel and cylinder release to the right of the hammer). However, they are both almost too pretty to put in a holster.

I have a K22 pre-model 17 dated 1947 that takes the top spot.
Gun makes me look better than I am. Colt KC Target is a close second. Ruger SP-101 (newer style) is not bad, but not on the level of the above. None of them likely can touch a Korth and I won't claim otherwise. Single actions are also not bad and are welcome for plinking duty. I have a few that see occasional use; the steel ones tend to do the best. I disagree that plinking necessarily = fast DA shooting. But that's just me... |

Not a fan of the convertibles make mine either magnum or .22 LR.
The .22 magnum's bullet is .223, .22 LR is .222 my convertible single 6 was more accurate with magnum ammo.

Probably this one.
A Smith and Wesson K-22 Masterpiece that shipped in 1950. ![]() I like this one a lot, a K-22 Combat Masterpiece that shipped in 1953, however I prefer the 6 inch barrel of the other one. ![]() This K-22 Outdoorsman that shipped in 1935 is fun, but the rear sights are difficult to adjust with the tiny adjustment screws. ![]() Here is my Model 17-3 that I bought brand-spanky new in 1975. It is no slouch either. ![]() This beat up old K-22 Outdoorsman from 1932 is the most accurate of the bunch. ![]() This Model 617-6 stays home most of the time. I bought it because it is a ten shooter. I was shooting a steel match at the time and had to put 8 shots on the target in 30 seconds. Could not do that with my six shooters. Anyway, I think this one is butt ugly with the full length underlug and the ugly rubber grips. I'm more of a classic guy myself. ![]() |
