I need help with my 1911

I bought a .45 1911 model from a guy that works with me... the problem is that I dont really know what brand the gun is! I asked him and he doesn't know either. The gun says "G.I on the barrell and that is all. Can anyone help me find out more about this G.I stuff? thanks!

A picture would help greatly as there are a few manufacturers with "GI" models.

So you bought a gun with out knowing what it is...... Sounds fishy. Also if you went to a gun shop to transfer it... the sheet provided to you (Application of Sale for a Handgun) should have the Make Model and Serial Number filled out for you.

"GI" obviously indicates "Government Issue." For a 1911, the name and city of the maker of the receiver, and the serial number, should be on the right side of the receiver, just below the slide. If you see nothing there, remove the grips and see if there's anything stamped or engraved under the grip panels.

Does this thing have a serial number? If not, you may have bought yourself a HUGE legal can of worms. If this thing happens to be an old military issue M1911 or M1911A1 that has had the serial number and "United States Property" markings removed, you need to know that it is against Federal law (and the laws of many states) to remove, alter or deface the serial number on a firearm. The "gotcha" is that the Federal law provides that whoever is in possession of a firearm with an altered, defaced or removed serial number is legally presumed to be the person who performed the removal or alteration ... even if it was actually done before you were born.

If this is a "scrubbed" 1911, give it back to your "friend" and get your money back. Don't let his problem become your problem.

Let's don't overreact yet. He didn't specifically say there was no serial number and it may be there on the frame. Photos would be nice.

Without pictures or a serial number, there really isn't any way to help you at this point.
