CX4, 9 or 45
Contemplating buying one this year and stuck on caliber choice. Mag capacity is not a factor in my decision as I would get the SP mag conversion if I got the 45. Large capacity mags never interested me anyway.
As I cast and reload, ammo cost isn't a factor either. This will be mainly used as a HD and range plinker rifle. Honestly I love the 45 round, just something about the solid thump when it hits the target. Other than those two exclusions, what say you and why? |

the 45 drops like a rock and has the inertia of a ping pong ball. 9mm, though lighter, doesn't slow down quite as fast so it could be handloaded to perform some light hunting, home defense, and range toy duty.

I forgot to add, I would be experimenting with various bullet weights if I got the 45. 185, 200, 230's. The 9mm would get the 125 RN I have already.

Although I have a bunch of 45 ACP guns and ammo I went with the 9mm.
I did because I have a Beretta Cougar 8000 which you could get the Storm carbine with the same magazine. I don’t believe you can any more. I can’t really come up with another reason. I’m glad I did. Mine really likes lead bullets and the cost for me shoot 9mm is very low. If you reload for the one you get keep the loads in the upper pressure level. The gun has a lot of mass for the bolt and it can have some ejection issues if you stay in the lower load levels. My guess is that it’s had well over 2000 rounds and for plinking it is by far my favorite pistol caliber carbine. My MP5 is boring in comparison. I would suggest you get the one you have the most ammo for. I will warn you, you will eat up whatever you have in the ammo bucket.

similar situation
I went with the 45 and also bought it for HD.
I increased my mags to 10+1. I plink at 50 yards which is still fun as heck with a red dot. I also added a lasermax grip so aiming it is about as good as it gets. While many tout the .223 for HD due to penetration, my priority was the noise factor. I can't imagine discharging an AR inside my home nor can I imagine I would have time to put on hearing protection during a break in. So, the 45 CX4 was the perfect choice to justify a suppressor. Just got this myself a few weeks ago and just entering the reloading aspect of this. I am looking now at possible loads and finding the right load for the cx4 is hopefully going to be a fun experiment this Spring.

Honestly and I just stated this in the other thread discussing AR for HD and you mentioned the CX4.... I would choose based on if you had a 92 or px4 in the same caliber, or planned on it. You can buy CX4 with either mag, and you can share your mags with your handgun.
Just food for thought anyway. Either caliber is serviceable, I would go buy purchasing or already having the matching pistol. |

As for magazine compatibility, I don't have a 92 or PX4 so that point is moot. |

i'd get 9mm simply because the the round count. while 10 rounds of .45 isn't bad. ill take 30 rounds of 9mm.

I have the 45. IMHO, if I can't clear the problem in 10 rounds then adding another 20+ into the fight probably won't help.
In actuality, I bought the 45 because it's the caliber I prefer - all my handguns are 45s. |

Those that have the 45, how is the recoil? Unpleasant to shoot a few mags through?
I ask because the HiPoint 9mm I had was surprisingly 'snappy' considering the caliber, on par with my AR's recoil. |

recoil
more than I expected to be honest but I would not consider AR felt recoil.
I guess I can say that I can shoot 100 rounds without any discomfort during or after but like I said, more than I expected. 185 grains are on order, hollow points, to see what happens with recoil and fps.

Recoil was not stout, very manageable. Easy to put two boxes thru.

Good to know. I've watched countless videos and it doesn't look like much. Personally I don't care but don't want my GF to fire a mag through it and hand it back. Or maybe I do.
