Help me ID this die, please
I have a die here marked:
RCBS D 22 VAR TRIM I'm assuming it's a .22-250 trim die, but I have no idea how it's used. Clues, anyone? |

If it's like other trim dies, you'd just lube the case, then seat it into the die with a press, and any brass that extends out the top of the die would be trimmed off with a hacksaw or file. HTH.

Hmm. That's what I was thinking, but a sized case run in as far as it will go leaves the case mouth about .1" or so below the top still. Maybe it's for some variant, like an AI or something? I think I'll leave this one alone and stick to my rotary trimmer. Thanks for the info.

Could it actually be for the cartridge below? If not, just call RCBS. They'd be happy to tell you, I expect.

Steveno,
Darn! Doesn't explain the difference in neck length, though. I thought I might be on to something with that. DBotkin, Are you running a full-length resized case in, or a fireformed case? Depending on your chamber, the latter might not go all the way in.

I think file trim dies were used more if forming cases to something else and there more case to remove than a person would want to trim off with a rotary trimmer. I would just put it the miscellanous box and forget it

Mystery solved. I had been reluctant to really press a case into this thing. but I threaded it into the press and ran a case into it until the ram almost touched the bottom of the die. Case neck was exactly even with the top. So, it looks like it's good for the .22-250... but I'll still stick to my rotary.

Those kind of trim dies were popular a LONG time ago. Always seemed like the most difficult way to trim cases there was.

Thanks to all! Now I feel really old because I'm looking for that type of die for the .222! I want to reform some .223 mili brass to work up some cast bullet loads. Sure took the wind out of my sails!
