.223 and 308WIN Powder...

New to re-loading and going to do the rounds looking for powder. I want one to start with that works well with .223 and 308WIN. My first choice was H335 but what are some other good choices?

Thanks in advance!

So many....

Check out the lists in any Reloading Book/s.

748, IMR-4895, H-4895, Varget..... These are my first choices. What and how you load and for what will be your determining factors.

Enjoy and be safe,

OSOK

I just bought a pound of CFE223 for $35.00 today, my only regret is I only have the pound to load with so its 223 for now, but I would like to try it in my 308.

a couple of other options that might be available (these days, you need all the options available!) Ramshot TAC, Accurate 2460 and IMR-8208-XBR. I have used each with good results in the .223, would expect decent performance in the .308 Win.

Thanks for the replies. I am going to be loading the .223 with 55grain and higher weight bullets. The .308 with 168 grain bullets most of the time.

Looked in my manual and found quite a few options. Was asking to get some favorites or properties of some. Probably just going to get anything that is available.

.223 and 308WIN Powder...

Hodgdon BL-C2 was the original 7.62x51 powder and also is good in .223. That would be my first choice to load both .223 and .308. Varget would be my second choice.

H335 = WC844 military surplus (usually available) = 223 mil spec
can also be used to load 308, where it is best with lighter bullets.
BL-C2 = WC846 military surplus (usually available) = 308 mil spec
can also be used to load 223.

But what I purchased last was Accurate 2520 which will give you maximum velocity with 65, 69 and 75 gr 223 and 165, 168, 180 (all per Sierra manual and Accurates data). I have not loaded any of my one pound jar yet, but am already planning buying more. Accurate ball powders meter very well and I have really liked what I have used so far, which was 8 lbs of Data 2230-C.

I didn't like 748 in 223. It started to give me high pressure signs with heavier bullets but maybe it's ok with 55s. I found 4895 to be good and it's a go to 308 powder for many. TAC and 2230 are also good in 223 and I've read they work also in 308.
