Hornady Bullets

Hi Folks,
Im trying some new bullets, hornady SST .308 -150gr. I was wondering if any of you had experience with this bullet on deer size animals.

Thanks, Bill

I haven't tried the SST yet, but I have shot some of the original flatbase and btsps. Hornady has a tougher jacket than a Sierra or Core Lokt, so the expansion at close ranges is more controlled than with the thin skinned bullets. I like them really; they have killed every deer I ever shot them at with 1 shot and didn't tear up a bunch of meat doing so. The SST has that bleeping plastic tip (EVERYTHING THESE DAYS IS PLASTIC!) and that makes them no more or less reliable than say a Nosler or Swift. I've heard bad things about the newer Noslers holding together on big animals like these 250 lb. deer we encounter here; maybe the Hornady with the tougher jacket will be better. Until I run out of Sierra Pro Hunters and Core Lokts, they'll have to be field tested by some other budding gunscribe. CB.

I shot a large Doe with the 165 grn SST this past Dec. with a 30-06. It was the Hornady light magnum factory load. Quartering away shot from about 100 yrds, entry rear of ribs, exit just behind off shoulder. The bullet passed completely through with small entry wound and an exit wound about 3.5 inches in diameter. The bullet took out two ribs and left a very large (about 10 inches) bloodshot area on the exit side. With a little less speed from the 308 it might be OK, but they seemed to be too destuctive to me with the 30-06. However, the animal dropped dead in its tracks and appeared to have been hit with a car the way it was knocked down.

Bill 13; the best load I ever found for my old stainless M700 in 300 Win Mag was 67.0 of WW760 or H414 over a Hornady 165 flatbase Interlock in WW new unprimed brass and CCI 200s. 3 shot groups of 5/8 inches at 100. CB.

I shot about 12 different deer with the 30 cal 150gr Hornady SST bullet and all but one droped in it's tracks. The one when 20 yards, I had hit it a little high. I have found these bullets to be a exellent chioce for deer size animals. Off a little but I shot a Moose at 425 yards with the same load and put the SST bullets through both shoulders and they rested under the skin on the opposite side. The bullets retained arounds 60 to 70% of thier weight.

sst`s

I have used 129gn sst`s in 260rem and find they do a lot of hydraulic damage, went back to 120 sierra gamekings and meat damage is much reduced.

Bill

2 years ago I took my deer with the 165 SST in 300 WM. Pretty close range (maybe about 80-100 yds.). Lots of bloodshot down the length of deer. Next time think I will jump up to the 180 grain if using the 300 WM for deer, either in SST or Interlock to slow things down a little.

This year I took out 7 Mag, with a 160 gr. Speer SP knocked down the same with less damage.

Not talking little southern/eastern whitetail here. Talking about large muleys we have over here.
