Affordable Single Shot Rifles
Are there any decent single shots available under $1000?
I'm not looking at break actions. Only really interested in falling blocks, trapdoors, or rolling blocks. Also needs to be in a deer or bigger caliber so thinking .357 if a pistol caliber or .243 if rifle caliber. I've looked and while I love the Ruger No 1 I think its right on the edge of my financial comfort level. Use will be range fun and North American Hunting primarily for deer at generally 200 yards or less. Realistically thinking 100 yards or less. I hunt traditional black power but have lost a bit of manual dexterity in my hands during the winter. Reloading has gotten to be a bit difficult in the cold. I however love the more traditional actions that single shots provide so if I can get the feel with out the struggle so much the better. I can afford a nicer gun, but this is going to be a working gun and I just struggle sometimes taking a $1000 + gun on a woods walk when $700 would fit the bill. I'm more concerned about function and performance than pure looks as long as it retains some of the flavor of at least the action I'm looking for. |

Want to clarify one thing. .357 and .243 are minimums. Can go bigger. Really was just trying to eliminate Rimfire or .223 options. Guess I should have just said that.

CVA Apex and T/C Encore both fit your requirements.

Ruger No. 1 is only "available in select, limited edition models each year.". They start at $1899.00 MSRP.
"...357 and .243..." No currently available new .357(Marginal for deer too.). A .243 is a TALO Distributor Exclusive. And their site doesn't list any Ruger No. 1's. Henry makes a break action that's reasonably priced. https://www.henryusa.com/rifles/single-shot-rifle/ Other action types all run over a grand.

I don't understand why Henry hasn't tried that market.

Henry does make a break action single shot which appear to be nice guns just not what I'm looking for.
Taylors and company and Uberti make high walls and rolling blocks in the $800-1000 range. I'm not horribly familiar with their products though. Came across those today while doing some research. |

Sorry, I missed the "no break action" requirement when I suggested Apex and Encore. Too bad. Both would have been good choices for hunting.

Chiappa makes a mini-Sharps in 22H, 357, 44, 30-30 and 30-40.They run about $1200. Or a Dakota for about twice that.
You can buy a reproduction Highwall for about the same from Pedersoli. You can buy an original Winchester 1885 for about $1500. You can buy a new production Winchester 1885 in just about any caliber you want for about $1100.

Hello,
I have the Uberti replica of Winchester 1885 in 45-70. I am very, very happy with it!!! I use it for target shooting only, I imagine it could be cumbersome to take around all day while hunting but not being an hunter myself I better not comment on this. It has a great trigger, very crisp and not excessively light nor heavy. It is also fairly accurate.

The 1000 dollar limit is just enough to eliminate ALL the reasonable quality options. it as if he has deliberately taken all the guns off the table. There have been exceptions, if you live 24/7 on the web and willing to jump at any reasonable caliber. In general, NO, you will not find gloss blue, quality brand, nice walnut falling block under $1000. You will find a lot of options around 1200, 1300, 1400 range. That is the price or make a mission of looking very hard for a long time or find some low quality off brand and revel in saving 200 bucks to buy cheap. I have a good impression of Uberti and do not care for what I have seen from Pedersoli. That is to save 100 bucks? No way.
There was a batch of No1's on cableas for $999. They sold pretty fast. That is over and may never happen again. The sales tax alone would put that over the 1000 mark. I did check buds and found one 1885 for $1100 in 270 win. Cash, free shipping. Like I said, you set a 1000 limit, you get nothing. https://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/...or+28+1+Walnut Say 1200-1400 now you can really select from a wide variety of makers and calibers with various barrel lengths and weights. That includes Ruger No1 and Winchester 1885. Edit: I'll be! There are some Uberti well under 1000 28" round barrel and proper flat buttplate, it is 45/70 which is pretty versatile for loading. https://www.gunbroker.com/item/739536817 2nd Edit: I see this is discounted as a display model. Then I suppose Uberti, as a quality product will also top the 1000 limit as a new rifle. Last edited by fourbore; January 17, 2018 at 11:49 AM. |

I have used many of the Uberti products over the years with fine results. Pederosli I have limited experience none of which was negative. The 1000 dollar limit and break open does take a lot off the table and make the search much more difficult.

I recently picked up a used mint Pedersoli 1874 Sharps in 45-70 and I must say when up close the craftsmanship is top notch. You also pay higher money for the Pedersoli's much respected match barrels.

It's possible to find a lightly used or even new Ruger No 1 rifle for $1,000 or so. Last year i bought a NIB Ruger No 1 in caliber 9.3X62 for $950 plus tax. Got a $50 discount from Cabela's.

What kind of prices are you seeing? I've been thinking of selling off a large portion of my small collection of #1's, mostly B models. Just haven't decided yet. I still like hunting with them. Paul B.

The 1885s are the nicest rifles, had a Winchester/Miroku in 22lr that was a gem.

Check the CDNN site...
They currently have in their catalog Ruger #1's, 1885's and (I think) Remington Rolling Blocks UNDER $1000... Also, look at Dixie Gun Works, www.dixiegunworks.com. They have a constantly changing inventory. Think the lowest for a Pederoli Sharps or Rolling Block right now is about $1100-1200 but I've seen them much lower in the last few years. Although not quite as nice as the Peredsoli's, I picked up a 1873 Trapdoor Carbine several years ago for $450! T. |

A Ruger No. 3 in 30-40 Krag makes a great shooter. Mine is the most accurate of the many .30 rifles I have, with a great trigger. They can usually be found under a grand. They came in other chamberings, too. CDNN has 1885s at $899, thereabouts.

I would shop my lgs for the used #1. I got one in 375 h@h last year for $800 out the door used of course. Also came really close to picking one up in 45-70 last month for $900. Of course now I wish I had got it. They go fast but pawn shops and lgs will usually drop from marked prices. Especially now that hunting season is over.

A Ruger # 1 is probably the most practical.Likely a barrel would not see extreme round count in a used one. As you say you intend for it to get used,no problem if you find one that looks used not abused.
I've seen a few "Spaghetti" Sharps. A 45-70 Sharps fits your 100 is yard criteria. From what I've seen, the Pedersoli,Taylor,Cimmaron, etc are good guns. Of course, the ones made in Montana...Shilo and...whats the other? I forget.Realnice guns.Might not fit your budget. Who knows what trapdoor or rolling block you might find! |

I will be selling my Browning 1885 , 45-70 which would fit your needs. A wonderful old cartridge , very appropriate for deer /black bear even with
the 300 gr. factory load. Hotter loads for bigger stuff if you need it.
