Kel-Tec Sub-2000 foldable scope mount solution

Greetings all!

I've finally snagged a Sub-2000, knowing that adding an optic and still being able to fold it would present a challenge.

Even though the FPS difference from a pistol isn't huge, I don't plan on using it for personal defense out of concern for over penetration. That, plus practicality and preferring precision at the range means I've ruled out a red dot.

Does anyone have experience adding an offset scope to a Sub-2000? I'd like to shoot for somewhere in the 3-9x or up to 12x magnification since iron sights are fine for short range plinking. I figure I'd sight for 50 or so feet and just find a point of aim for longer distances (my usual range bay maxes out around 100').

I haven't looked at rings yet, but my concern is the objective lens may be large enough to prevent folding completely.

K. So ...

I have no experience with the scopes you listed. The Sub 2000 can still fold with the Woltis offsets you linked. Be careful with them 'cause you will have very limited options for rings that will mount to the Woltis and still clear the receiver allowing complete fold/lock. Additionally, you will need a pair of them to support a scope and you give up some of the polymer limited stability.

The best immediately available mounting solution is:. https://www.redlionprecision.com/Sea...s.asp?Cat=1824. The Red Lion solution allows you to mount scope and rings of your choosing and then index the forearm to move the glass out of the way to fold it and put it away.

The other popular alternative (less costly) is to use quick release mounts so that the optic can be removed to fold the Sub 2000. Many then placehold the optic on the lower forearm rail and report good success with their optics repeating their zero when reattached. IME, the quality QR optic mount that repeats zero on reattachment puts you right back into Red Lion $$ range.

I don't think the sub2000 is accurate enough to make a scope worth it. Most 9mm carbines group around 4-5 moa at 100yds. It gets worse as the distance increases.

You don't need magnification inside 100yds either... so if you are shooting at 25yds, 50, 75, or even 100... you don't need magnification to shoot well. You can still group a rifle well with a red dot, not scope good, but still pretty good.

But I think a scope on a sub2000 is pointless. That isn't what the rifle is designed for, nor is it capable of putting a scope to good use.

I know there are folding mount options available, but that was a few years ago, when MAC reviewed on.

Thanks Dred & marine6680 for the input. It's good to hear the Woltis would be an option. The Red Lion is a bit pricey and I'd probably go for it in a defensive application, but a cheap offset optic seems to fulfill the KISS principle.

Those links have a lot of Sub 2k info to absorb any time soon, but I'll have to investigate...

As far as a scope vs red dot or iron...I'm pretty set on a scope. Most of my shooting has actually been iron sight standing 10m air rifle (or short range pistol), and I'm pretty used to tight groups. If I can keep better 9mm groups at longer range with a scope (not even up to 100 yards), I consider it a good investment.
