Powder recommendations for WC's

In the following instances is it best to use a fast or slow burning power when loading the 148gr WC in 38 Special:

Target shooting?
Self Defence?

The traditional paper punching .38 special 148 gr LWC target load is about 2.7 gr of Bullseye which puts them out in the neighborhood of 725 f/s. This is the typical minimum load that will function a target auto-loader like the S&W Model 52. For a hotter load, about 3.8 of Bullseye will take you to 950 f/s. Switching to 4.6 gr of Unique will go to about 1,000 f/s.
Check you manual for actual reloading data.

only two (best) choices

Bullseye, and W231.
Not guessing.
