low priced .223 bolt for coyote?

I am looking for a low priced .223 bolt action firearm for coyote hunting. It HAS to be light... so Varmint rifles are out.

suggestions?

Stevens 200, Mosberg ATR, or find something used would be my suggestion. You can pick up the Stevens for less than $300 at most places. Mount a budget scope and you should still be able to have a coyote rig for less than $400.

The Stevens 200 was my first choice, but I couldnt find one chambered in .223

I have since found my mistake. The 200 short is chambered for .223. I was searching through the 200 longs.

Save your money, then get a nice Remington. A M7 CDL comes in .223Rem at 6 and 1/2lbs. Short, light, and beautiful. And I'm sure it would be extremely accurate, it's a Remington!

rofl. I hope this post doesn't offend anyone, as it is not directed toward any one person.

People who post looking for cheap firearms do not always have to "save" if they wanted to purchase a more expensive firearm. I am a case in point. If I WANTED a more expensive rifle, I would have BOUGHT a more expensive rifle.

Start reading the "cheap" part of the thread, and stop suggesting that people save money to buy a more expensive rifle. it is such an assanine assumption.

Save, of course, for those who specify "I cannot afford anything else."

As stated before... the decision has been made. I will be purchasing a savage-stevens 200 chambered in .223.

For those "save" answers... I also ordered a Savage 10FP .308, harris bipod, and mueller Tac-II scope... and a Savage Mark-II FV 22LR, for which I will be starting paperwork on a suppressor for in a week or two.

The Stevens 200 was "cheap" for a reason, and its NOT because I cannot afford something better.

oh... Mr Awesome.... you DO have quite good taste in rifles. I almost bought a M7 last week off a friend of mine who is selling his for $400. It has about 50 rounds through the chamber, currently. (its a .308)

He even offered to trade me my AR15 Varmint and $200 for it. I might buy it off him in the near future, But I just don't feel like trading either of my ARs for a bolt rifle right now.

I am actually amazed that the M7 doesn't come more highly recommended for tactical and varmint purposes than it does. It seems the 700 SPS-V is the new flavor of the week. Rapidly being replaced, of course, by the SPS-Tactical which is a premier dealer item (although most dealers can order them, no problem). It has a 20" Barrel instead of the 26" sps-v barrel.

Heard some good things about the Howa 1500...Theyre pretty good deal round here, ill prob look at them for my next 223

You could always get an H&R single shot in .223. You won't get quick followup shots, but they can be had new for under $250 or so and are quality guns. Trigger pull is a little heavy though

the Howa 1500 seems to be pretty decent, but the price is about $80 more than the stevens 200. (my gun guy is quite good on pricing)

Single shots I do not really like. Not even for playing at the range. I prefer to reload as little as possible.

It is a much nicer rifle though IMHO. It has a super smooth action and a great trigger that is adjustable (I like mine as it come out of the box). I have two differernt howa's in .270

might have to buy one in a couple of weeks. Do they come in 22-250? I think that is going to be the chamber of my next purchase. Im fascinated by the newer calibers such as that and the .204 Ruger.

Love my HOWA 1500. 22" barrel, easy to manuever, very accurate. Synthetic stock, gets beat up, who cares...It's accurate, and has a great easy to adjust trigger. The new ones have the 3 position safety which I like a lot. No trigger creep. Mine is a 22-250.

Like others have said. Savage and Stevens rifles are pretty inexpensive. I have an NEF .233 that is a tack driver. You just better make your only shot count.
