375 Winchester

I was out hunting last wknd, and it still surprises me when some one says to me "A 375 Winchester? What's that?"
I have a Marlin 375 (336), it's great for the thick timbers of Western Washington. It pushes a 200 grn jacketed flat point to 2350 fps
My partner uses a 32 Winchester special!

So what's your favorite woods gun?

Not many of those Marlins were made, only a few more by Winchester. They both had a short run about 30-35 years ago so it is understandable that not many have heard of the round. My brother had one of the Marlin 375's for a while but sold it at a profit a few years later. It is a good round for someone wanting a lever action. It basically splits the difference between 30-30 and 45-70.

If I'm in a nostalgic mood I will hunt with one of these.

Both are 1958 made rifles in 30-30. The same year as my birth. But if I'm serious about killing game one of my scoped bolt rifles in 308 is the better tool. They are lighter scoped than the levers are unscoped and the flatter trajectory is a huge plus even at woods ranges to thread bullets through baseball sized openings.

This is my serious woods gun.

Had a Ruger #3 in .375 Winchester. I used it as a dedicated (no jacketed bullets), cast bullet hunting gun. With the velocities of the .375, nothing can be gained by using jacketed. Great deer gun.

Savage also made the Model 99 in .375 Winchester for a number of years.

I'm from up on the Caprock in west Texas.... what are these "woods" you speak of? Is it like this?

Actually, I had a model 94 BigBore in .375 for a while. It's a fun cartridge, and probably just great for big deer sized game. I traded it for a Marlin 1895 SS, because I've always wanted to try a .45-70.

For thick timber in my neck of the woods i use a Savage 99 in 303 savage with a fixed 4x weaver. Borrowed it from my dad a few years back...forgot to return it...funny thing is he did the same to my grandfather and grand dad did the same to his cousin. Great shooter.

It must be getting very hard to find ammo for that one, or even cases for hand loading for that matter.

my father has dedicated years to stocking up components for this gun. hornady actually made a run of ammo this year out of their custom shop. We bought three or four cases from a local shop. Cleaned them all out. They arent quite as accurate as the old winchester silver tip ammo. Beggers cant be choosers.

I started off with a Marlin in .450 as my brushbuster but it was literally the worst lever action I have ever laid hands on. Traded it at a local pawn shop for a Winchester Big Bore in .375 Win and never looked back. I absolutely love this rifle. It's lighter and better handling and the quality is much better than that **** of a Marlin.

I also would HIGHLY recommend you do an online search for written articles by Paco Kelly.... He has written a couple of articles about the .375 Winchester, and they are well worth reading (and SAVING).

Picture of my 375 win, left to me by my father. One of few pictures I have of him is standing outside a helicopter in the Northern Territory in Australia with it. Apparently after a day of shooting diseased cattle on the station he ran. Apologize for the cell phone quality picture.

My short(ish) range, woods/brush gun is a Ruger Hawkeye in .358 Winchester. Loaded with 250 gr bullets at about 2,200 fps, it's taken care of Antelope and Elk quite well.

Woods?

[/URL]

Gifted to me when I was 14......still punches right through a typical Alabama 150 lb. whitetail at the 50-100 yards we normally hunt in these thick woods.

What was wrong with your 450 Marlin? I have never heard of a bad one!

I like my Savage Model 99 chambered in .358 Winchester. Whitetails don't travel far when a well placed 200 grain Silvertip finds its mark.

Harry, the front sight was broken right out of the box, when I touched it it broke and fell off. Put on a set of fiber optic sights and all was good- until I took it to the range. Loaded it and cycled the action and it jammed solid. Took me almost 20 minutes to work the round out. Looked inside and didn't notice anything. Tried it again thinking it was a bad round and same thing, jammed solid. Got the round out of it and did some closer looking and noticed the lifter was visibly bent. The round was stopping half way out of the mag tube and getting wedged onto the lifter locking up the action. And no- I didn't grizzlie bear the action trying to close it. I'm no expert on lever guns but I've owned a few including older Marlins and never seen the like. Took it to a local shop/smith who said he could fix it and traded it for the Win Big Bore and never looked back. Shame, it was a nice looking rifle. The Winchester however, has yet to let me down in any way.

I actually had the same problem with my first .450. I sent it back to Marlin and it was solid. I am sure the .375 recoils a little less though!
