Wheel weights on the cheap

I got a 5 gallon bucket of wheel weights for .20 a pound today. I know we are beyond the days a free but I think I scored. What are you guys getting them for these day? Well if yoh can find them that is.

Cant get em. NO SALES TO THE PUBLIC at all scrapyards here, and all of the garages are under contract with battery companies or lead recyclers.

I'm pretty stocked on lead anyway. I had a buddy in TN who really fixed me up with enough muzzleloader fodder for a few years to come!

Well deerslayer, I guess I'm still fortunate, I still get mine for free. I just picked up a 5gal bucket this past weekend at my local tire shop. They've been good to me for many years. Of course I've bought several $$$ off of them over the years too.

I'm paying .65/lb but have to sift through all the zinc and Fe weights first.

They have plenty of pure lead though, so if WW dry up I'll switch to powdercoating.

I have a free source and a pay source. The free source does not produce enough for me. The pay source is .80 a lb.

I am still processing range lead that I picked up from an indoor range years ago and now a new indoor range has just opened up. Wheel weights forget it I tried at the place the family gets their tires from and there aint any since they have been banned.

Ther still is a scrap yard that I can get roof shething from. I am starting to think that I should be shooting log ends at my range so I could collect some of the lead from the ash but I am afraid that most would go up the chimney at the cabin.

I pretty much gave up on WW's over a year ago. Too many Zn/Fe to mess with. I make all my alloys now from pure and other alloys needed. Clean, fast, easy. No more re-melting smelly dirty old COWW's for me. Last batch I bought averaged $1/# after skimming and separating all the darned clips and gunk out.

If you are lucky enough to find good clean (and no Zn/Fe) weights for a decent price these days and enjoy melting them, go for it! Ingotized & cleaned COWW alloy goes for $1.50/# or so from what I have seen.

I get em free and have to sift thru the fe and zinc, but the price is right. Have to wait until summer to melt down the stickons.

my local recycler lets me buy any wheel weights they get in for .30/lb. I bought 100 lbs last Saturday. I have found very few zinc weights in itl, but lots of stick ons. No prohibition on selling to the public. They are quite willing to sell them to me, they are relieved of the task of sorting through any zinc ones I guess. Now I just have to find time to smelt and then cast.

Found 65# of pure today, already clean and ingotized. Tests 4.7-5.0 on the Lee tester. And only .75/lb. Not bad!

No WW though.

I pay 20$ for a five gallon bucket full. but the source is slow, only a bucket every 2-3 months. but that is way more than I can use. so I am just saving to pass on to others if I reach critical mass. the shop offers it for free, but I give him 20 so he will hopefully stay faithful.
