Changing from H4350 to IMR 4350

Local reloading shop sez he may be getting some one-pounders in (don't want to commit to the 8's without knowing how it'll shoot) and the H4350 is scarce like hen's teeth.

IMR seems to be more "readily" (whatever that means these days) available.

I'm completely out of the "H", and was wondering how those of you that may have made a similar switch have fared. I'm told the IMR is a tad hotter and to reduce the load slightly.

Caliber is 7-08, with the 162 Amax (found a few, until I run out) for 1000 yard shooting.

Yes you should simply back off and work back up. Seems the smaller the cases the more it takes. Personally I wold simply start at the bottom and work up so your sure your not going to see any issues.

The IMR is a bit faster burning than the hodgdon, but like I mentioned it also depends on how big of a case your using it in. In something like the 7-08 it would be similar to my .243 in that I had to back off 2 grains from my Hodgdon load. That is also dependent on how fast the particular lot is as well.

Just saying drop off 2 grains and your good, is simply not good enough when your looking at 60K of pressure 4" from your face.

I was using H4895 in my 7-08 until I could no longer find any, switched to IMR 4895 and loaded according to the Nosler manual and found I got even better results with the IMR. Also been using IMR 4350 with real good results. Not shooting 1000 yds though, more like 200 to 300.

I have used IMR 4350 powder from the first day I started reloading and still do. Have on occasion used H-4550 in the past when IMR wasn't available in this local. Never noticed much difference between the two concerning my 270s targeting. But a as precautionary it wouldn't hurt any dropping that powder charge your accustom too a little {like Mike/Tx has previously suggested} and tweaking it back up again. Who knows. Maybe you'll create an even better recipe than the recipe your now using for that 7MM-08 of yours. Surely that event if it were to take place would be a +1 wouldn't you think.

I've used both in my 30-06. At the end of the day accuracy is exactly the same for me as is velocity. But I use about 1/2 gr less of the IMR 4350 to get there, so I'd start light and work up. I'd expect similar things from a 7-08.

I prefer the H4350 only because it is less sensitive to temperature changes. Probably will never be an issue, but if I'm not giving up anything else, why not use it. If I can find it.

My .270 Win., 30-06 love IMR 4350.So does my .243 with 100 gr. bullets. hdbiker
