Optics on fighting shotguns

Of course the optics on AR's and the like is already an established benefit according to many"in the know" such as noteable Pat Rogers. Recently the market has seen an increasing number of shotgun rails to mount optics such as Aimpoints. How do you all feel about that benefits drawbacks etc... I shoot only slugs in my truck/ranch and home defense shotgun and have been thinking about having one set up with an Aimpoint.

If you shoot slugs then thats a good idea. I keep one shotgun scoped and the other with a bead sight for versitility.

I do like sights on a defensive shotgun, but I'm content with irons. 'Course, there are those who say I'm an old fuddyduddy stick in the mud Luddite sort...

I think a good holosight or reflex sight is a good idea. Especially for slugs. The main advantage is faster target aquisition, but the bead sights on shotguns a probably the fastest iron sight system to put into action. So the benifits for buckshot is probably moot.

Shotguns are wonderful close range weapons and not so good long range tools. Most folks can get good hits with a bead and slugs out past 50 yards with some practice.

My two "Serious" 870s have peep sights, but they double as venison acquisition tools with slugs.

I don't think the optics are crucial.
