If it is indeed one letter (K) and just 5 digits (and you didn't miss one), then it dates to 1950.
But since you said it is a five screw, then yep, sure sounds like a very nice old K-38. These guns got model numbers assigned to them around 1957... and the K-38 Masterpiece was issued the name of Model 14. So your revolver might casually be called or considered a "pre-Model 14." Cool revolver!

Single alpha and only five digits indicates 1948 -- which wouldn't be a 17-2, that would be before model numbers. Now if you missed one digit and it's K32394x, that one shows 1958.
Could be me... sometimes the serial number index cornfuses me. ![]()

Believe C464xxx is going to be late 1960.

can you guys/gals help me date/identify this one Please
hello I picked up a nice little smith and wesson snub nose 5 shot 38 special today at a yard sale and was wondering if anyone could help me out . Its not like my other pistol as far as the way its marked. the serial number is only 5 digits and no letters 260xx on the cylinder arm is the letter A then below that is 94 25 7 it also has a flatter cylinder release than my 14-2 4in heavy barrel
any info would be great thanks dan |

If not, then I'll need the number from the underside of the grip frame to date it. Early "J" frames (pre 1968) had a flatter cylinder release latch. Jim |

thanks Tom for that info but it does not seem to go back far enough, this revolver I believe was made in the 1880's

One other thing that I didn't mention was that it is the model with the spur trigger

Scored two more classic S&W's:
Model 586 no dash, ADE0xxx, based on no dash I think between 81-85. Model 36 no dash, 19xxx, I'd guess mid 60's maybe? Any info would be appreciated! |

Model 36 no dash, 19xxx. = Take the serial number from the underside of the grip frame. 19xxx would date to 1952 which is 5 years before they stamped model numbers so that is likely an assembly number. Jim |
