another 223 question

Hello everyone,

Ok im sure this has been asked before but im looking for a load for my 223. I want to use ether varget or imr 4895. Which one would be the best for the 223. The bullet im using is a winchester 55g FMJ. I cant find data for just a FMJ but the lyman book im using has a load for a 55g soft point and have loads for both the varget and the 4895. It has a OAL of 2.260. So can i use that load data or would i need something else. It will be shot out of a savage model 12fv. Any guidance would be great. thanks for all the help.

Sierra's #1355 FMJBT manual is,
H4895 start-23.1 FPS-2800 to 26.1 FPS-3300 MAX
Varget start-23.7 FPS-2800 to 26.9 FPS-3200 MAX
Hornady # 2267 FMJBT manual is,
IMR4895 start-22.7 FPS-2800 to 25.1 FPS-3100 MAX
Varget start-22.8 FPS-2800 to 26.4 FPS-3200 MAX
Hodgdon's reload manual only shows
W748 26.2 FPS-3170 MAX show a Winchesters FMJ

As always start low and work your way up and I hope this helps.

yes you can use the data for the 55gn bullet.but remember that they are two different bullets that will give two different signs of pressure.so load with caution.or just use a ladder test to work up the load.this is a proven way to work up a load for a rifel.
