I purchased this with promise to my wife not to buy another gun for a number of years. The timing on it is rock solid and the action is still silk smooth. The barrel was apparently lopped off by gunsmith. The barrel has a gash on it, but other than that I dig the short barreled look of it. I shot it, and so far have had zero problems. I may however take it to a smith and have some cosmetic work done on the gash. I ordered a pair of smaller altamont grips and a bronze Tyler grip. What do you guys think?

What was it before it's circumcision?

Not bad at all. Where's the "gash" you were speaking of? That black space under the front sight? That's not Magna-porting is it?

Personally, I'd probably leave the grips that are on it, on, but that's individual taste. Unless I could find a set of period grips for it at a reasonable price.

I knew it was in the wrong spot for a Magna-Port but that's the only thing I could think of that looked like that.

Vent rib does make more sense. Thanks.

Looks like a handy revolver. I'm not a fan of the way the gash/vent rib looks but how it shoots is more important. Probably be a good carry piece.

I have a pencil barrel model 10 im considering doing the same thing too. I really like 3 inch barrels and the thin front sight isn’t anything spectacular. Id keep the target stocks on it but thats just me. Cool piece, enjoy.

This is the gash. I was concerned that the bastard would explode in my hands if i shot it. That however is not the case. It's just an ugly patch of bad cuts. [IMG]

You have a neat project gun. Looks like the gun is good condition basically. Hope Bubba has not goofed up the internals.

Maybe we should have a contest for project guns. Who has the most interesting project bringing a handgun like your N frame Smith back to life.

Looks like a M1917 barrel, which shouldn't be tough to replace.
Maybe an Argie M1937 barrel?

What model gun is this and what caliber?

Ah OK I enlarged the pic and saw the markings on the barrel.

This is a Pre-Model 22 aka the 45 Hand Ejector Model of 1950 or the "1950 Army"or 1950 Military. A 5 screw N frame revolver with a square butt and actually introduced in 1951. It's a descendant of the M1917. In 1957 it became the Model 22.

These were chambered in 45 acp though about 200 were made in 45 Colt. The latter being rare.

The original stocks were Magna style and of checkered walnut. They do look and work well with Tyler T grips.

May shoot well but it was a butcher that did the work on the barrel and who made the new sights. You don't have to worry about it looking beat up.

My first thought too ... vent rib front sight , not a too bad looking job .
I have seen much worse .
If it hits where it points I would be a happy camper !
Short barreled , big bore N frames are sexy looking and the finish is great for a shooter ... Looks like a winner to me .

Great project base. Bob the hammer, shorten the grip-frame, add a T-Grip. I did that on an old Colt, looking to do similar to a Smith 1917.

All guns are always loaded. 2. Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy. 3. Keep your finger off the trigger till you are ready to shoot. 4.
