.44 Special, .44 Magnum, .45 Colt........

Best choice, .44 Special, .44 Magnum, or .45 Colt?

My .44s:

And my .45s:

Far as I'm concerned, the jury is still out.

Well duh. By the time you've worked your way from the first to the last gun you forget what the first gun was like, so you have to start over again. It's an endless loop, rinse and repeat forever.

It's sad just sad.

. Indeed. The verdict is 'in' here . Nice collection. Lots of hardware there to enjoy.

.44 Magnum is in a different power class, but in spite of what I am sure will be a passel of posts from their fans, .44 Special, .44-40 and .45 Colt are all much of a muchness, effectively the same in power and performance. All can be loaded much hotter than factory, given a gun of adequate strength.

I'm a big .45 Colt fan although I do like the .44 Mag. My vote goes to the .45 Colt, just something about that cartridge that I really enjoy.

Bob, the correct answer is staring you in the face.
Several of each.

And you do need at least one .41 and at least one .30 Carbine. My .30 Carbine Blackhawk is by far the most accurate of the lot.

In this cast I will say my favorite is the 45 Colt, I like the 44spl & 44mag but I really enjoy the 45's push rather than the snap of the 44 in the hand. That is a nice collection you have there, a Ruger 45 SA 4 5/8 feels just right for me.

Stunning family portrait, and simply love the brass dragoon...

CaryC, or Swindler grips perhaps?

and just a few minutes ago I started a new thread with the last sentence being that I haven't owned a big SA revolver since the early 90s and need to get myself one to fill that obvious gap. Now after seeing this I've got a complex...

Those are walnut, finished with Tru-Oil, by Cary Chapman, of CLC grips.

All were done by Doug Turnbull, of Turnbull Restorations.

The grips shown were a mix of CLC and Lett Co., now out of business.

Thank you all for the nice comments.

I like them all fine. Very nice group of SA revolvers.

The SAA in 44 Special...

The SAA clone in 45 Colt...

Don't have a 44 Magnum in SA, but I have a couple of DA Smiths in this caliber...

Have a few older Smiths in 44 Special...

Even have one in 45 Colt...

Should we bring up the 41 Magnum while we're at it?

Just pick one and master it. I really don't care which round you use or even which hogleg.

I'm happy with my 629-2 4 inch .44 for field use. Yes I have others but this one does fine on it's own and the rest sleep in the gun safe.

Nice collection! My one big gap in my collection is a good cartridge SA revolver (I do have two blackpowder revolvers, but no cartridge guns). I seriously need one or two, and all the more so now.

As for .44spl, .44mag, and .45Colt, the only one I have in that group is the .45LC. It is a more versatile caliber (though I suppose the .44mag is a more versatile chambering since it can take both .44mag and .44spl). It can do anything the .44spl can and be downright gentle to the shooter, but in the right loads (and guns) it can do 80-90% of what the .44mag can and pretty much anything that most shooters will need it to do.

That said, I do need to eventually get a .44spl. Probably one of the L-frame S&W's if I can ever find one at a reasonable price, or the Taurus 445 or 431 (nice CCW sized big bore revolvers).

I may eventually add a .44mag, though I think I need to replace the .41mag S&W that I sold a few years back and desperately miss before getting a .44mag. It will do most of what a .44mag will but without the punishing recoil of .44mag or a stout .45LC (at least, I experience the recoil as a much lighter recoil impulse). Still, I may get the .44 first for the same reason I sold the .41 to begin with (ammo and reloading components cost and availability).

Well, I did that. But then I wanted to learn more, and from firsthand experience. I tried nearly everything I had heard, shot everything from wax bullets to 3Fg blackpowder, and everything was just so much fun I didn't know where to stop.
