Bowling Pin Fun
Give me a second before you say I'm posting in the wrong spot.
I have bowling pins suspended from an old swing set frame for practice. I've shot them to pieces so they mostly have a shell and sawdust inside. I'm going to replace them but first decided to have some fun. First I took my Model 70 Featherweight in 270 Win and started whacking them at 100 yards. Got bored, too easy, so dug out the M1 to do a bit of shooting setting rapid fire. Let me tell you, a M1 keeps those puppies flying. Great fun, no back to the reloading tables, I have a CMP GSM Clinic and Match this week end. Just thought I'd post some trivial fun.

do bowling alleys charge you anything for the pins, or are they free?

Most do, how much depends on the demand in the area.
There are free "practice pins" out there. When pins get shot a bit, they wont stand up and have to be replaced. Most clubs will give you those pins for free. Take them and drill some holes in the top so you can screw in an "eye" bolt. Suspend them from a swing set or something else that will hold them about 36"s off the ground. Use 5, 16"s apart and shoot them at 25 feet. Good practice for pin matches, you can shoot them quite a bit before there is nothing left.

At one time when I was a competitive pin shooter, shooting the larger matches around the USA I had over 1000 practice pins in my barn. When the larger pin matches ceased to exist I still had over 600 pins in my barn. I sold most of them to a pistol club putting on club matches, sold some to a lady that paints on them. I still have a regulation steel pin table on my shooting range. The table is made out of half inch plate steel and weighs 1020 pounds. Pin shooting was my first love in competition shooting, if the big pin matches were still taking place I would most likely still be shooting them today.
