Wild Boar - 44mag Ruger Carbine - What else?

I am starting to plan a boar hunting trip. Not sure where yet. I bought a ruger 44mag carbine specifically for boar, but my brother only hunts deer and birds. What is a good secondary gun to have on a boar hunt? We have mostly shot guns and long range guns.

If by "long range gun" you mean something like a .308, .30-06, etc... you are golden. You can kill those hogs just as dead with a "rifle" as with a "carbine".

Slugs and 00 or 000 buckshot out of a 12ga will also put hogs down effectively, you just have to get a little closer. Be careful if you elect to shoot slugs, many full choke shotguns or shotguns with screw-in choke tubes can be damaged by using the slugs.

Here are two links with hog anatomy and hunting tips:

Good Luck

Thanks, He has a nice Benelli SBE rifled and scoped for deer as well as a scoped 30.06. I guess it depends on the terrain.
What are the premier states for hogs? Texas...Arkansas...

You will definitely want to start packing for a trip down here to Texas if you are after hogs. We are overrun with them. You can hunt them year round and finding a good cheap place to hunt them is no problem whatsoever.

I don't know which state is best for boar hunting. I used to hunt California for pigs, but they can be hard to locate and hard to pattern.

Hunted once in Tennessee, and it was like going shopping at the supermarket. Pigs came up out of the creek bottom, out in the field. Looked them over, picked my pig, shot him right behind the ear. Almost felt bad about shooting that old Durock. Almost.

I've been looking at Texas. They say they have lots of pigs, and they do have oaks and hickories. And they say everything in Texas is bigger. I'll have to give it a try.

As much as I love my home state of Kentucky, you can pretty much take it off the list of possible pig hunting destinations.

Unfortunatly we dont have wild pig hunting here in Wa. If we did I would use 12guage slugs.

I can't vote on this one...

I have heard Texas is the best...

But Kalifornica wasn't on the list and they have a few excellent areas for pigs.

If someone would tell me how to post a video with a link... I would show you all a really great 20 seconds of pig hunt...

You left out California where these great beasts have been wild for decades.

You left out Pennsylvania where wild boar are also hunted. Tioga ROCKS!

A secondary gun? Do you mean a 22 handgun for a finisher to the head?

I don't know aboput the states listed but California harvests anywhere from 6000-9000 hogs a year, mostly in the central coastal region...
