Sure it is. And as humans we all make mistakes. It could happen to you, me and anyone.

Knock on wood, I've never fully chambered incorrect ammo, however one range trip with my 8mm Mauser K98, I realized when I was ready to chamber my first round I realized I grabbed a bag of 308 handloads. Long story about poorly marked bags and rushing to get to the range. Lesson learned.

It can happen to any of us. I've only had one screw-up in 50+ years of shooting. I had 5.56 round with a high primer. I knew it was high and had planned to ease the bolt down and fire the round. Like an idiot, got in a hurry and let the bolt fly. It kaboomed and set off round when it wasn't fully chambered. Only damage, the AR was the index pen on the barrel was sheared off when the barrel rotated a 1/4". It could have been much worse.

I believe we've already made this point, but I will add a story that I was told at a local range:

My buddy as a Tavor and one of the other club members told him that it was a really nice gun. My buddy offered him to shoot it and the other member said "No thanks, I already owned one". Then proceeded to tell us a story where he and one of his compatriots was at a 3 gun match: The member lent his compatriot the member's Tavor. Upon the next stage, the compatriot loaded up a mag, slammed the bolt home. The rifle fired, but it was more of a squib load. At this point the compatriot realized something was wrong, ceased fire, and dropped the mag. Upon inspection, he realized that he had loaded a magazine of 300blk. The Tavor had actually attempted to fire the round and hadn't blown up. Now at this point, the compatriot had the Tavor rebarreled for the member, however the member ended up selling it to his compatriot.

So, like everyone said, don't do it. And be extremely careful with what you feed your rifle.

I have a band around my 300BLK loaded mags in orange letter/numbers 300BLK 300BLK all the way around. Real easy to see what I'm trying to insert in the mag well.

My .300 BLK go in magpul mags, .223 goes in aluminum mags.

I dont take both to the range at the same time.

...as a less useful piece of trivia, 7.62x39 will do the same thing in a .243 Winchester chamber, even those two are WAY less likely to get mixed up...
