Problems loading the 140gr SST
I am having some COL issues when seating the bullet to the canalure. If seated this way the COL goes down to 3.215. Acording to the powder manual the COL should be 3.280. Will loading this way cause any problems? The SST round has the canalure higher up on the bullet than a 150gr Corelok that I had.
_C240926.JPG The SST is longer and more of it is in the case neck than the Corelok. The Remington COL measures 3.302. _C240927.JPG This is a 270WIN and I am using H4831 powder. What should I do? Thanks |

The canalure is meaningless for seating depth.
Are you crimping? Some people want to crimp into a canalure, but it's not necessary. You can crimp anywhere on the bullet. If you're not crimping, it's completely meaningless.

As Peetza said, seat to OAL. When I first started loading SSTs, I also noticed the cannelure was very high on the case. I then compared the length to other bullets and realized why.

Unless you're crimping the bullet with an old-fashioned crimp tool, ignore the cannelure.
I'm assuming your .270 is a bolt-action, and unless it's a lever or semi that bangs the cartridges around, there's no reason to crimp the bullet. Neck tension is sufficient to hold the bullet in place. Simply seat the bullet to that point that gives you best accuracy and don't worry about the cannelure. Oh, and Merry Christmas. |

I do crimp using the Lee Factory Crimp die. I wonder why they would put the canalure so high up on the bullet if there is no way to obtain COL. I believe I will contact Hornaday customer service and put the question to them.
Thanks guys |
