Polyurethane

Can anybody tell me how to remove a thick polyurethane finish without ruining the wood or checkering?

Methylene chloride paint stripper removes most polyurethanes.
MEK can also be effective.

Be careful with the MEK, can be nasty!

The methylene chloride is actually them ore dangerous of the two. It metabolizes and ties up hemoglobin the same way carbon monoxide does.
Use outdoors and only if you have no history of heart problems.

MEK (Methyl Ethyl Ketone) is acually a pure solvent and has fewer side effects than even paint thinner.
The biggst side effect is wallet weight reductuion friom the cost.
