electronic ear muffs

What would you recommend?

It would be used mostly for shotguns.

Some rimfire and 308 kind of stuff (not heavy magnums). Handguns when I get them.

It would be a birthday present...

Did clays again, got two with one shot

Turned around and asked, "where did the other one go??"

I have a pair of Howard Leight muffs and love them. They are relatively low profile, adjustable, and fold up nicely to fit in my range/marsh bag. A big plus for me is they amplify normal sounds, while cancelling out the harmful gun noise.

I second the Howard leight. I have gone through several pairs of various electronic muffs, and the Howard leight impacts are definitely the best

I own a set of the Howard Leight Impact. They are not bad value for the price and better than the low-end Peltor Tac 6 but they are nowhere near the best.

I use Peltor ComTac for shotgunning and the Peltor ProTac for rifle shooting and indoor handgun. Compared to the Leights the Peltors have a faster response time, sound much better and are more durable. These qualities among other features make the Peltors worth the extra cost.

The Leights meanwhile are used as loaners when I take guests to the club.

The majority of competitive shotgunners around here use in-the-ear protection because they find the headphone/muff-type cumbersome and interfere with their gun's dynamics. It depends on your stock fit and height of your cheek bone. Try mounting your gun with the muffs before you buy them.

I use muffs only for pistol shooting. At the rifle range two days ago, and was the only one without muffs. It may be a regional shotgunning preference, in the sunbelt we're not used to wearing ear muffs. You're probably very familiar with them in Minnesota.
