.308 loads for Coyotes

I am looking for some good loads for my .308 to use on Coyotes. I have used 110gr V-Max in the past with good results, however I would like to load up something a bit heavier. Does anyone have any suggestions?

A bit heavier for Coyotes? You're going to end up with major over-penetration if you go with heavier bullets. IMHO anything over 125gr is too much for coyotes.

Just my opinion.

Thanks, and this I know already. I was hoping for a 125gr load or something just a hair bit heavier than the 100 or 110's. I am inclined to use the .223 anyhow, I was just looking for something else to try.

Coyotes may be pests, but they're not the toughest critters around. Even a well-placed .22 WMR will take one down with one shot. A .223 should be plenty. The .308 strikes me as overkill.

If one comes around here (they're in the neighborhood), I wouldn't hesitate to use a .38 Spl or .357 Mag.

[eds -- move this at your discretion. It probably doesn't belong in the reloading forum].

au contraire.... I was looking for load recipes or pet loads for .308 using 125gr or so bullets that I could use on coyotes. Anyway, I still have some of the 110 V-Max loaded up that I will probably use. I know .308 may be overkill, but what the heck, I like to shoot it and the Coyotes need to be dealt with. Sounds like a match made in heaven to me...

I would use the 125 Sierra Spitzer, the 130 Sreer H.P. Both bullets have a very good rep for accuracy.

Something a little wilder? Sierra makes a 125 H.P. Designed for the 30-30. It.is .307 diameter but I never had any trouble with them in my old 788 Rem. They have a GAPING hollow point and just explode at .308 velocities. They were good for 1" to 1 1/4" @100 in that rifle. I shot a bunch of desert Jack Rabbits with them and the results were......well........impressive

I used to hunt varmints with a guy who used 130 gr Hornady or 125 gr Sierra bullets. Every bit as accurate and impressive on impact as my 22-250. They shot better than the 110 gr bullets because he could seat them closer to the rifling. They shot flatter than the 110 gr past 300 yds. I would give them a try in your 308.
