>38 Special +P Again.

I’m new to reloading and have some questions. Please bear with me, as those of you that have been reloading for a while have heard the questions over and over.

I’ve looked in the archives and read what is there, but I’m still confused.

I’ll be reloading .38 special. I’m using new brass and modern guns, so I “think” I don’t have to worry about weaker brass.

I’m interested in making +P loads. My guns are either rated for +P or a .357 mag.

I’m not interested in making really hot loads, just middle of the road +P rounds.

OK. Here goes.

1. Do I need to use brass that is stamped +P or can I use .38 special brass?

2. Is there any difference between +P brass and .38 Special brass?

3. My reloading manuals talk briefly about +P but not in any detail. Are the max loads considered +P?

Many thanks in advance.

From Starline Brass -

Quote:
38 SPL+P has no difference from the standard 38 SPL, other than headstamp designation for load segregation. Due to standard case design, will handle +P pressures with no problems.
Some manuals have a section for 38+P's. If yours doesn't I would consider the Max loads as +P.

What manual do you have?

Handloading Manuals

Thanks for the replies. I have Lyman's 48th and Hornady's 7th. They both have +P loads, or state that the hotter loads should be considered +P but neither one discusses brass.

Thanks again for the info.

My Pet Load for 38 spl +P

From one Arizonan to another, I have been playing around with 38 spl loads for 25 yrs and found one +P load above all that shoots well in every 38/357 I have ever owned.

38 Spl +P
Mix 38 brass
Win SP (Primer)
5.6 Gr Unique (this is max - work up to this)
125 JHP (Dillon's bulk Remingtons are a good deal)
Seated on the canlure, with Light crimp
Velocity in 4" bbl = 1020 fps

For 357, every thing stays the same, but in the 357 case Load 7.5gr of Unique - and you have a great light mag load (1250 fps in 6" bbl). If you get up to phoenix, Dillon bulk bullets are a good deal. Also try Montana Gold (free freight). Good luck.

No other brass for +P, it will be the same brass loaded for another recipe.
