10/22 auto release parts . . . ?

FTL Gang:
In another thread there is reference to "auto release parts" for a 10/22 bolt. Does this make it easer to get the bolt released to slide forward? Someone please tell me about these. I'd have inquired as part of that thread but this seemed worthy of a separate conversation.

Yes, the 'auto-release' bolt catch for a 10-22 (either purchased, or modified from an OEM catch) allows you to pull the bolt back and lets it release without manipulating the bolt catch. It essentially operates like the slide lock on a semi-auto pistol.

I bought a replacement part and used it as a template to dremel a second 10/22 bolt release. I believe i own a Tandemkross bolt release -- there is a link to the Youtube installation.

Thanks. I found a two-pack of the part on amazon and ordered them for $14. On line video makes it look pretty easy to install. We'll see how it goes.

So I got the auto release parts. Watched an installation video a couple of time and installed them on my charger and my 10/22 rifle.

What I learned:

1. Some punches are not long enough to go through the whole assembly if the pins are tight.

2. Putting the gun back into its stock can be hard as they fit in there really tightly.

3. I should clean my 10/22 rifle more often. The trigger assembly was filthy and full of crud. The slot in the both of the assembly that the ejector fits into was so full of crud I could barely get the ejector out of it. To clean out that slot took more than solvent and a pipe cleaner. To get it to fit in there easily I had to take a jeweler's file to the slot.

4. And it's not all that hard to do. Kinda fun.

Now on both guns all you have to do is pull the slide back and they hop forward loading the chamber. A one hand function. Gotta love it.

What i do with my 22LR semi-autos is blow them out with Hornady Gun Cleaner and Lube or Break Free Powder Blast.
I shoot thousands of 22LRs and it is easier to just spray the actions out vs taking apart and cleaning.

Brake clean from the auto parts store is a heck of a lot cheaper. Keep these sort of cleaners away from stock finishes and polymer stocks.

I've modified a bunch of these over the years. The after market releases will allow you to pull the bolt back to release without the fiddling rock to unlock feature but it also won't stay locked back if you clean from the muzzle and hit the bolt with the rod. To modify a factor release you have to make an oval where the bump is in the middle of the lock. Sometimes it will take trial and error until it works right. It also requires you can file or grind by hand.
