It depends on the bullets used.
Those with a place for the roll crimp to roll into, use (drum roll) the roll crimp. Those with smooth sides, and no place for the roll crimp, use the taper crimp. Those with a cannilure for the roll crimp, but are loaded so the cannilure isn't at the mouth of the case, also use the taper crimp. At least that's the way I've always done it. So far, so good. |

For a lot of my revolver cartridges I have gradually been getting comfortable with less and less roll crimp. For most of them, a very mild roll crimp is plenty. Not so with the .454 Casull though. I believe that a good roll crimp is pretty important for that cartridge. That is a very healthy recoil there and I would be afraid of a taper crimp or very light roll crimp. With real .454 Casull loads, I think the possibility of bullets creeping forward is very real. I only load bullets that have a well definied cannelure so that I can give them a proper crimp.

Not sure how it is with the 454, but the big brother 460 requires a roll, THEN a taper. The Hornady set comes with both. I know the 454 isn't that far off the 460, so I don't think it's a bad idea.

wrong brand
The proper crimp die is the Redding Profile Crimp Die.
You can adjust it provide an extremely symmetrical taper, and further adjust it to finish with a roll. It has been rigorously tested (for years), offering enhanced accuracy and ballistic uniformity.
