newbie competitor

I'm interested in getting into competing. Firstly do you need to become a member of IDPA or USPSA to compete? Secondly do you need to be a member of the range or club where the competition is held to compete in it? Another question now that I'm thinking about it is what are the entry fee's typically?

Thanks for your help,
Mat.

Depends....

Usually you can shoot a match without joining the USPSA or IDPA. However, if you want to get ranked, and all that good stuff, a membership isn't such a bad thing.

The match rules will determine if you need to join or not. Around here it's $25 to $50 for a match. The state match is $100. for 3 gun.

I have friends to crash with in the Tampa area and I have shot with the Florida West Coast Defensive Pistol Club on a number of occasions. They used to use a range in Ruskin but now shoot on the Wyoming Antelope Club in Clearwater. I shot the Florida State IDPA there in February. WAC hosts both IDPA and USPSA/IPSC

Monthly club match fees are $10- $15 at the places I shoot.

Most individual matches are open and you do not have to be a club member. You are supposed to only get one match in IDPA before being required to join the national organization but a lot of places are not real strict on that with their cheapskates.

Thanks for the info, I was already looking into the antelope clube in clearwater as I enjoy outdoor ranges. I guess I just need to get out there and check things out for myself. I will probably join both and decide after I compete. Thanks for all of the links!

Cheers,
Mat

Don't "look into" it, go over there. They shoot IDPA on the Second Sunday and USPSA on the Fourth Sunday, with a "defensive pistol" that goes by their own rules every Thursday evening. You will regret every day you miss once you have tried it.

Stupid Question...

How do I find local matches? USPSA seems to be only showing major State and National events. I need to find local chapters, I assume?

Looking for events in Northern Virginia. Thanks!

Best,

Go to www.uspsa.org and enter your zip code in the Find a Club box on the right side of the home page.

The questions show that there are shooters interested in competing/shooting, but don't know where to look to find where or when.

I would suggest if you are looking to compete/shoot, start a post of what you are looking for (HP, LR, Uspsa/Ispc, IDPA, or just rifle, pistol, etc.) and where you live. Hopefully someone here can help you find what you are looking for.
