1st Coyote

Finally got one. I'd love to tell you story about set-up, calling, fast shooting etc. But, I was in a deer stand, it came in and I dropped it at 25yrds w/ a M-88 in .308.

If you hunt from a stand, take some table scraps along--steak or ham bone, for example--and set the bait out maybe 50 yards. You might toll a coyote or bobcat in.

And as snoopy-curious as whitetail are, you never know but what a deer or three will come past to check it out. I know that they're not scared off by a gutpile out in a pasture--which of course is good coyote bait.

If you kill a deer, gut it, haul it to the truck and then come back and sit for an hour or so and watch this bait pile you've made. You might get lucky.

Congradulations on a fine trophy. I have had the privalidge of living with them for years and taking many over the years. This is one of the unsung animals that is highly underrated as a trophy. A coyote is quite literally the second most itelligent animal on the continent, second only to man.

Congratulations Bluerat. I have em all around my house but never see em when I have a gun. I don't care that much for deer hunting but I've been trying to get a coyote.

Careful though... baiting is illegal in some states. I'm pretty sure you cant do it here in Texas.

Art, your from Texas; have you ever heard that baiting is illegal?

well done, 94bluerat. i hunt jackal about once a week and getting one sure is tough. did you weigh that one? i dont know if it is only the camera angle but that dog looks big. is that an average size coyote?

i always knew that the coyote was bigger than the jackal but if this is an average size coyote, it is a lot bigger than our jackal.

the largest jackal i shot weighed in at 33 pounds, but i dont know the record in africa.

It was just shy of 35lbs. The guy who helped me tan the hide said it was the best looking one he had seen here in SC.

There was a second one that came in 10 minutes later as I was getting out of the stand. It was smaller, darker and very scraggly and mangy looking. Didn't get a chance at the second one. It saw me reach for the rifle and did an about face and disappeared in a milisecond.

the dept of wildlife management re-introduced coyotes here several years ago. The population exploded to the point that now there is an open season on them, no limit either sex.

Very Nice!!! Here in Laurens county they are everywhere. A friend and I have a permit to night hunt coyotes from the game warden due to the problems his family has with them.

Many a time I have wanted to put out a large rat-trap for these varmints- so numerous! I read that these critters pull down as much as 60% of newborn fawns per year. In archery only areas these beasts are unstoppable - you do not want to not find a down/wounded animal - you will find nothing but bones in the morning.

Baiting for coyotes in Texas is legal. For that matter, so is baiting for deer.
