5.56 NATO in civillian mini 14

I have a ruger mini 14 chambered In .223. I have some army surplus 5.56 ammo. Was planning on using it, but was warned that even though it's Basicially the same load, it isn't intended for civillian rifles and will quickly ruin my barrel, any thoughts?

All mini 14's except the target model have 5.56 chambers. Any 5.56 or .223 ammo is fine.

Two years ago or later, the on-line Ruger manual info on the Mini 14 described the gun being suitable for both rounds.

Thank you so much for the info. My common sense told me it would be fine, but better safe than sorry. I have two of them. One is the ranch model and 2 years old. But with a scope, not much rapid fire, so wasn't really worried. But my older mini(and by far my favorite) I'm to emotionally attached to it to endanger it needlessly lol. Anyhow, thanks again.

Its fine.

I have a 581 series ranch rifle mini and I have shot a variety of 5.56 nato in it; M855 green tips, XM856 tracers, 5.56 frangible, S&B SS109... No problems at all.

Mini-14 rifles are not picky about ammo, I usually shoot "Silver bear" zinc plated steel case ammo. 1.5-2.5" groups are possible @ about 100 yards with the newer mini's with silver bear ammo, I have seen it (on a bench with optics of course).

Also if I am not mistaken the user manual says Cal .223 / 5.56 (except for target mini). I think the ruger website says the same.
