What semi-automatic shotgun? Primarily for home defense and with a maximum budget of around 1000 dollars.

New, you are probably limited to an 1100 or 1187 at that price. Limited is probably the wrong choice of words as one of those would be my 1st choice at any price if you want a gas operated gun.

You might be able to get a used Benelli under $1,000 which would be my choice if you want inertia operated.

I'd feel good about either choice, but have a slight preference for the Benelli.

I bought a new 11-87 20g a year ago, synthetic, field grade, nothing fancy. I got it for $525 at Gander.

I have a much older 1100 20g, premium grade, made in mid 1960's that I picked up used for $175. It needed minor repairs, maintenance and a good cleaning.

I hate the 11-87 and love the 1100, just saying.

Stoeger M3000. Has the Benelli trigger group and inertia operating system. The only thing "needed" is to replace the extractor with a Benelli M2 extractor. We have been running them pretty hard in 3Gun the past year and a half or so and they can handle the abuse and longer stack of shells, which the 1100s and 11-87s can not. You can get them for around $500 or less and add a tube for $60-$200 depending on what you are after. Literally best bang for the buck in a hard use shotgun under $1K.

A VersaMax Tactical would also be an option better than the 1100 or 11-87 and right at your upper limit. I would like to have a Benelli hammer, cam pin and trigger group springs (about $100 of parts) for long term durability.

On the clay fields and for upland bird hunting, sure. But there are lots of reasons that there is not a single person anywhere near the top in any "practical/tactical/3Gun" competition that uses one.

A field gun that holds 0 to 4 rounds in the magazine is fine, and there is an operational window it works in. When you add extensions upping the magazine capacity to 6 or more rounds, the 1100 and 11-87 lose their reliability, wear faster and become finicky. They are one of the weakest designs made for use with higher capacity magazine tubes.
