Refurbed Win M12 stocks

4 coats of BLO/Alkanet root and paste wax on top. I got that reddish Winchester tint that I wanted. Left all the wear marks in for character since 1955.

Where did you learn how to do that. I just inherited my grandfather's Win Model 12. It's in great condition, but the stock and forearm could use a little touching up. What's a good reference to find out how to recondition or restore the wood?

I have a model 25, which is the solid frame version on the model 12. I used tung oil with great success. I just used some sand paper and sanded the old finish off. I know that makes some people cringe, but the sanding was very light and it did not take any noticeable amount of material off. I just rubbed the tung oil on and waited 24 hours. I looks as good as what you did.

You mix 2 tablespoons of alkanet root powder into BLO, let it sit in an air tight jar for a week in a dark cool place with intermittent periods in sunlight. Filter out the root and pour the red oil into a new air tight container.

Apply as many coats as you like till you get the red hue that you like while wet sanding with 660 grit. Then hand rub the oil in so the wood soaks it up. 7+ coats is usually good. I did 4 on the Model 12.

when i recieved my md 12 the factory finish was peeling real bad(most was flaked off). i used a varnish remover along with 0000 steelwool(no sand paper) and put many coats of BLO and then howards wax and feed wax. eastbank.
