Lane Short Arm Shotgun Adapters

I got a few of these and I finally got to test them. They all worked pretty well. I could consistantly hit a jackrabbit sized target at about 30 yards. The 38/357 mag version was great. Even hot 357 loads had the spent brass fall out of the adapter. The 22s needed a little coercing.

My only complaint is that the 22mag inserts (both 12 and 20 ga) were picky about which brand they would fire on the first try. I tried 4 brands of ammo and only 2 always went off on the 1st try. The rest went off on try #1, 2, or 3.

I got them mostly for use with rat shot on dispatching wounded game. They will work very well for that without vaporizing the bird. But, they are a little louder that I thought they would be. However, I won't have to carry a seperate gun to fire the rat shot which is the whole idea.

I tried out the 357 insert with ratshot yesterday and it blew my target back a few feet and ripped it up. I was impressed. If I could find some non-toxic shot, I'd use it on duck as well as upland game.

The 12 to 20 guage insert worked pretty well also. Even shooting comparable loads in either gauge (1oz #7.5 at 1200 fps), the recoil with the 20 was less... something to do with the square inch case displacement vs PSI I think.

The recoil was less because the velocity of the 20-ga loads was less. You can't lower the pressure significantly (due to the larger bore) and expect the velocity to remain constant.

CREEK HENRY, I have used used all types of adpters for 45 years now. I myself have just purchaced 4 of the Shot Lane adapters and tested them as well. However I had very different results. From a bench rest I used the same 12x357 adapter. Factory 158 grain Remingtons resulted in a 5 shot group of @8" with 2 of the rounds keyholing the target all at 25 yards. The 22 lr did a repectable job but mine is an older unknown make and is rifled. Short lane adapters arent rifled. The 12gax20ga shot a good patern at 15 Yards @ 10 inches if IIRC and the 12gax410 did about the same. One thing to remember is even though they are shot in long barrel guns this does nothing to help the ballistics. Any round fired in an adapter that shoots a projectile smaller than the guns bore is actually being fired fron the length of the adapter itself. Thus my 12x357 will generate only the ballistics of a 357 shot in a gun with a 1" barrel. Same as the 12x20 adapter. The 20 guage is actually only being fired from a 1" barrel thus they have very severely reduced velocities.

3 of the SL adapters are rifled, 1 is not. I find that odd. My 12x357 is rifled as is the 12x22lr and 12x22mag. The 20x22mag is not and it is the one I'm having the most trouble with (misfires mostly). Again, I got them for shooting rat shot mostly.

Note also, I got the 20x22mag a few months after the 12ga ones. I guess the rifling was too expensive so they stopped doing it.

I will have to pattern test the 357 some time. My gut says I'll do better than 8" at 25 yards but we'll see.

I think the duck would have to be in the blind with you to be in range
