Reeves was the first shooter to score over 2600 in a conventional 2700 match (2606 in 1941). Don’t know his scores at the 50 yards were or his x count but a score of 2606/2700 means his average for 270 shots was 9.65/10. With a revolver. 90 of those shots were at 50 yards. Of course a lot of those were shot on the short line (25 yds) during the timed fire and rapid fire stages. Still..,, This year at the national pistol matches SFC Greg Markowski won the HarryyReeves Memorial revolver match (30 shots) with 281-9x. An average slightly lower than Reeves 1941 scores

Any NRA outdoor pistol record that Harry Reeves may have held with revolvers is now held by a semiautomatic.
That said, the last hurrah for revolvers in an NRA outdoor 2700 agg may have been at the 1965 US Army Major Command Pistol Matches at Fort Riley, KS. A Navy petty officer won the center fire 2700 agg shooting his stock Colt Python with Rem 38 Spcl wadcutters. Several top Army champion pistoleros stood and applauded him at the awards ceremony. Bart: not to get too far off topic...do you have the fellows name?
Did he win the whole shebang or just the centerfire stage?

Note about the dueling stage of the ISSF match: during the seven second period between shots the gun/shooting arm must lowered to a 45 degree angle. The shooter cannot raise the shooting arm until the buzzer sounds.

darkgael,
Boatswain Mate First Class Major Golden won the centerfire 900 agg. "Goldie" placed 3rd or 4th in the 2700 agg, as I remember. He was the 9th naval district Small Arms Marksmanship Instructor at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center near Waukegan, Illinois. He got me started in small arms competition when I was a Chief Petty Officer there in the mid 60's teaching large arms marksmanship with ship board gun and guided missile weapons systems. At a USN competitive shooters reunion some years ago (late 90's), Goldie and I was talking with Col. Walter Walsh, USMC (Ret) who placed third at the 1954 Nationals behind Harry Reeves. Col. Walsh won the Nationals in the 30's, forget the discipline; rifle, I think. Both knew and shot with Harry Reeves. https://www.ssusa.org/articles/2018/...atches-legend/ Last edited by Bart B.; July 29, 2019 at 10:36 AM. |
