S&W 38 Special CTG
I have a gun that was left by my stepfather when he died. One of the neighbors wants to buy it, but I don't know anything about guns. Here is all the information I have on it. Can anyone help me figure it out?

These went on to become the model 10 when S&W began assigning model numbers around 1957. These were pretty common and value depends heavily on condition, ranging from a couple hundred in beat-up to well over a thousand in "as new" condition. Jim |

I got one for ya. Don't know what model or have pics, but all I know is what I am told. It is a or a .44 mag. Entire gun is engraved with scrolls and fancy stuff. Mother of pearl grips and one side is carved with a steer head. It is rumored to have been part of the Dalton gang(Slim Dalton is what I was told) at one time. It has two sets of numbers on it, first the numbers on the frame by the cylinder and on the cylinder match and the are 79023, the numbers on the butt of the grip are 30834. This gun will be in my safe one day(it is my wife's grandmother's) and just trying to figure out how old it is and what model if anyone knows. Thanks for any info given.

Dalton gang was 1890's so it can't be a 44 special (1906) or 44 Magnum (1955). It could be a .44 Double Action (44 Russian). Serial numbers for those ran from 1 in 1881 to 54668 in 1913. Without a better discription/pictures I can't be much more help. Quote:

Hi,
I need some assistance in finding out the date of manufacture for a model 10-5, serial number D1435XX. Also, I'm looking for a blued 5" replacement barrel. I tried S&W, Brownells, Numrich, and Bud's, plus I'm trying to reach Jack First. Any other suggestions? It's a tapered pinned barrel. Thanks. |

Thanks FlyFish. Numrich has the tapered 10, 10-10 & 10-9 used take offs, if they can be made to work on a 10-5.
