I believe it is either an M&P or model 10.....can't find any model designation on the frame or barrel and the sn is 640389.
The model designation would be stamped in the frame cutout, the part of the frame that's exposed when you swing the cylinder out. But, based on the serial number, it won't have one. Your .38 M&P dates from the 1915 to 1942 period, corresponding to serial number range 241704 to 700000. You can interpolate using that information to get an approximate year. Model numbering didn't come along until 1957.

According to SCSW, the approximate date would be 1960. Approximate SN range that year was 62317 to 70000.

early 1988. Thanks for the photo - that's a handsome revolver.

Re: Looking for timeframe

Flyfish,

Thank you very much for that information. Looks like it is late 1930's vintage using your interpolation logic.

Pretty darn close.
While not an exact science (from the time S&W made/serial numbered the frame and actually assembled and shipped it as a complete gun could vary greatly), SN 642357 was 1934 so yours "likely" would fall in the same period.

Early K frame .22 ID?

Have a .22LR K frame, no model number on the crane or elsewhere so I am guessing it is a "pre-" model. SN K169XXX, any help on both the model designation and it's relative rarity would be appreciated.

Yes, that serial number would correspond to a production year of 1952, about 5 years before S&W started using model numbers. If it has a 6" barrel with a Patridge front sight, it's a K-22 Masterpiece (pre Model 17); with a 4" barrel and ramped front sight, it's a K-22 Combat Masterpiece (pre Model 18).

Neither model would be considered particularly rare, though both are very popular and command premium prices when in good condition. I don't know what the production numbers might have been, but FWIW I see lots more Model 17s than 18s listed for sale and I've always assumed that they made more of them.

Serial numbers ran from 62317 to 70000 in 1960. Since approx. SN 70000 to 1991 when the model was discontinued, Model 34s were made on the J frame; prior to that they were built on the improved I frame.

Can anyone advise on a 27-2, serial N214972? I believe it to be 1964-1965, but haven't confirmed that.

It's a shooter grade with a nice set of magnas that aren't matched to the gun, and it has been refinished in hard chrome. Some evidence of old pitting under the grips, but it's been nicely covered by the new finish.

It's a bit newer than that. The N2xxxxx serial number range was used from 1974 to 1977, with the latter half of the range used mostly for Model 28s and 58s. So, your gun is likely 1974, maybe 1975.

Thanks FlyFish
Noticed a "K" in the frame where the ejector rod sits - thought it might be a K frame - glad you cleared it up.

Paid $325 out the door of LGS, thought it was fair as it is in nice condition - in my opinion. I love the little thing!

Grips have a diamond pattern and are in good shape. If I want to put newer wood grips on to shoot with.. are they available? Keeping the originals safe when out in the woods.

The SCSW only covers up to 2005. You'll need to contact S&W customer Service and they'll give you the DOB over the phone for free.

S&W model 1917

Anybody know the approximate DOB of my new (to me) Smith and Wesson model 1917 serial number 104xxx? I'm planning on getting a letter of authenticity from Smith once I can afford the $50, but in the meantime would like an approximate date if available.

Thanks in advance

model 1917 serial number 104xxx
Serial numbers ran from 1 in Sept. 1917 to 169959 in Jan 1919.

Serial numbers after that were for various commercial/civilian versions made up to ~1950.

OK S&W is closed for the week so if someone wants to be my friend, tell me when a Second Model .455 HE was made, serial number 46XXX, "U" export proof on butt but no military proofs.

Wilds serial number book is missing too.
