Press advice from a tractor supply retail store.

I was killing some time today and went in to Cal Ranch and there was a guy standing at the counter with a hornaday single stage. The guy behind the counter was maybe 25. He was selling this hard.

Nothing wrong with this press, but to say it is superior to not RCBS and Dillon is garbage. He wasn't saying anything about being new to reloading you should start with single stage, but that this press is far superior to any other press.

Probably because it was the only press they had.

Some people. Geeez do your research then find what you like and get it. The kid behind that counter has no idea. Also they have zero supplies so the press does no good.

Mel.

My observation is that Hornady does a real good job at selling.

I have a whole bunch of their products. LnL AP, case prep center, dies, scale, etc.., however as I learned to reload and got more serious about precision I had to replace most of them.

Don't want to start a war just stating my experience.

Maybe where the expression "The blind leading the blind" comes from. Good sales folks will promote their items and try to sell them. Nature of the business and how sales people get promotions. Folks are entitled to their opinions of what is best and have the right to express that opinion. Folks that go to retail stores and don't know this, need a lesson in life anyway. A Hornady SS Press is a cheap life lesson. Life goes on.

For starters . . . if you work for a store and they only carry "brand X" . . . that is what you are supposed to sell . . . and work hard at selling so the store moves merchandise and can pay their overhead and that sales clerk's wage. . . . regardless of what the sales clerk's background or experience is . . .

I agree . . . do your research and buy what is "right" for you . . . but . . . having said that . . . many folks want to get in to reloading but really don't know that much about it . all they know is that they want to be able to avoid the high cost of store bought ammo.

When I started to get in to reloading . . . I did research and asked a lot of questions . . even on this forum. Unfortunately, like any forum, everybody has their own "likes and dislikes" and it was even more confusing as from what I was hearing . . . every brand had their shortcomings. . . . and every brand was better than the other. :roll eyes: All I wanted to do was load pistol ammo and not go into production.

After reloading for a time now . . . I've come to realize that a person DOES need to research and buy what is right for them . . not what is right for the other guy. Personally, I use an old RCBS Jr3 for de-priming and sizing and a Lee 4 hole turret . . . I have Lee dies as well as RCBS, Lyman and Hornady . . the Lee dies work great for me and the loads I'm doing - I cast all my bullets as well . . . and I have found the "dreaded Lee FCD to work very well for me. That's not to say the other brand of dies aren't good . . . they are.

Unfortunately, I see too many rushing in to buying what they "think" they need rather than what they "actually need" . . but that goes along with human nature as well as other product lines as well. I really don't care what the color of my equipment is . . red, green, blue, etc . . . as long as it works for what I need.

Sorry I didn't articulate my point well.

Not bashing any equipment. It all has a purpose.

Besides being retired LEO I have huge sales background. Even owning a retail store. There are ways to sell equipment, then there is what I saw. Never ever bash your competitor's product! He just needed to redirect the guy back to the benefits of his product.

I am and was posting this from my phone, so some things get lost as I slowly type this sorry.

I kinda meant this as a chuckle not a rant. Again sorry if that didn't get through.

Mel

PS I almost bought the LNL progressive when I found the deal I got.

"Good" salesman always believe that the product they are selling is THE best that has ever graced the planet. Honestly. They believe it. With every fiber in their being. They could quit working at the Ford dealer today and go across the street to the Chevy dealer, still be driving the Ford that was, yesterday, "the best thing in this galaxy and maybe Andromeda too" and today the Chevy makes Ford look like rusted scrap from the bottom of the ocean. And they'll believe it. With every fiber in their being.
