reloading 1858 remington
I just ordered a 45 conversion cylinder for my 58 remington percussion revolver. Has anyone had any experience with reloading for one of these? I will try light smokeless and bp loads but i was wondering about bullet weights and sizing. Any info would be appreciated, thanks.

Your conversion cylinder maker may suggest reduced cowboy loads. For targets and plinking, you might be happier with an even lighter load. You didn't mention the cartridge of your cylinder.
If a .45ACP, A cast SWC in 185 to 200 gr over 3.5 gr of Bullseye or 3.9 gr of 231 make low recoil target rounds at about 650 fps. If you're getting the converter in .45LC, You could start with 4.5 gr of Green Dot, about 500 fps, or 6.0 gr of Unique, about 600 fps, or 6.0 gr of 231, about 775 fps. With these big cases and low velocities you're working with relatively low pressures and the same starting loads can be used for 175 gr to 250 gr LFNs. Consult a manual before loading. The data provided are extracted from Lymans Cast Bullet Handbook. |
