I had in the past when I first got my Delta Elite back in '94, but I think that was more because it was a new (to me anyway) gun and I was really excited about it. I used 155gr Federal JHPs in it for normal SD/HD and the 180gr Winchester Silvertips as a woods load. Both were/are great loads and gave me a lot of confidence, but I eventually went onto something more practical for conceal carry. It's just a range gun now although I haven't shot it in ages.

I guess I'd carry a 10mm if it's all that was available. I actually carry a .38 by choice. Some times carry a 9.

G20

I've had a Glock 20 since the Clinton era. The 10mm Auto ctg intrigued me, and I answered an ad for a pvt sale of a Colt Delta......sold before I arrived. But the guy had a G20 and I bought it. My first Glock.

I like the versatility of the ctg. When bamaboy was a early teen wanting to shoot IDPA, , the Glock seemed the easiest handgun system to teach. The G20 was all I had, so I loaded it down to mild .40 S&W levels (180 at 850) and he shot it more than I did for a while. Loaded a bit stronger, a 180 at 1000 fps, I carry it as a woods pistol, where it is flatter and lighter than magnum revolver, but offers near mag power. Loaded all up, a 180 at 1200 fps, it is a lot of handgun power for SD or hunting.

I bought some 175 gr Silvertips W-W and that is the SD load. They do not quite make 1200 fps from the G20, though some come close, avg about 1170. I have not taken a deer with the G20, but do carry it as a SD gun anytime I have been to the woods and it has been along. Little point in carrying two handguns on a trip. One for town and one for the woods? Doesn't make sense. So the G20 goes the SD route when necessary.

The biggest drawback of the G20, and its .45 twin, the G21, is size. Though flat and tidy, and lighter than many mag revolvers, it has a large butt/grip area, and does not conceal easily for me in a inside waistband holster w/o an exterior cover garment like a jacket or vest. A shirttail just doesn't get it. So the big Glocks get a belt holster and a jacket or vest. Which means cooler weather. Hot weather, I carry something else, these days, often a G17.

In the early 1990s, I bought a 10mm and it became my nightstand gun. I have never had a good reason to retire it so it's still filling that spot. But nightstands never complain about heavy guns or have trouble with concealment, or get uncomfortable when a large gun digs into their side.

If I ever actually carried it for self-defense, I can't remember it--and I think I would.

I would and could carry it, but I have other guns more suitable for the task.

The 10mm is pretty much the same as a .357Magnum. The .357 takes top honors in the energy department, but not by much. The 10mm has a small advantage in the momentum category. Both easily outclass the .45ACP in either category.

Well, there's a reason the big 10mm AUTO is called the 'Best-Meter.'

180gns @ 1400fps/784fpe ...

None better.

Sure.

Carry it all the time in the woods. 200 gr XTP handloads at about 1200 fps.

Good for 4 or 2 legged.

In just 2 legged defense world I usually go with 9mm though.

Nope.

I'm sure it's a very capable caliber, but I don't place much faith in one-shot-stops.
And anyone whom I believe simple MUST be shot, will certainly be shot more than once.
And I make follow-up shots quicker and more accurately with 9mm.

Not my first choice. I like the 10mm (we have 4 of them) but the round is more powerful than you need for SD and the handguns we have are all full-size so not the best for carry. The 10mm is great for hunting with heavier bullets (200 and up) and it has very good accuracy in a quality gun. For SD something smaller and less powerful like the 9mm, 327 mag, or 38/357 works better IMHO.

Absolutely.

I would ensure that like my 44 magnum when tasked with SD duties it is holding light for caliber JHP's. In the 10mm I would look at 135's -155's running hot.

I have Glocks 20sf and 29sf. The 29 is on my carry permit (in Ca, you have to specify up to three guns [max] to put on your permit.).

I don't carry my 29 often. It's bulky with sharp edges that tend to pinch at my spare tire (I have IWB and OWB holsters for it).

In the warm months - about 9 months/year here - I carry almost exclusively a compact 9 (Kahr CW9) due to concealment concerns with light clothing. In the cool months, I often carry my Smith 686+ 3". I'm a revolver guy and find it the most comforting (psychologically) of all my carry pieces. Therefore the G29 tends to sit in the safe.

A couple years ago, I drove to Oklahoma. The G29 came for the ride. In that instance (car carry - long drive), I liked the thought of having a stout round AND mag capacity (10 x 2).

No...9mm(Glock19), .380(Glock 42) sufficient for me..YMMV and all that.

Saw a video of a woman carrying then shooting a Glock 20..the recoil/shock to her hands and arms was 'impressive' and her carrying it(slim girl) was..well, let's just say it printed some. Yes, women can carry and fire a 10mm but better choices, IMHO.

For a concealed EDC gun, yeah. But that's what the diminutive G29 is for.

The G40 is best carried openly in a center-chest holster - when handgun hunting, tramping through the boonies (including bear country), or while working out on the range or around the farmstead.

Would you or do you carry 10MM for self defense?

I would, but do not. I carry 357Sig, but I have a G20, a G29, and an SR1911 in 10mm. The 10mm is a great cartridge and I like versatility, so my answer is YES, I would carry 10mm.

I bought my G29 just for that purpose, as a carry pistol. I carry a G33, or a G32, but also have a G30s, and the G29.

Yes, But...

For 2 legged predators I don't see where the 10mm offers any real advantage over the better 9mm, 40, 45, or 357 loads, magnum or Sig.
jmr40 nailed it early in the thread. The load in question for this thread is relatively light for caliber in order to achieve the desired results. It might work just fine but I'd only consider it if 10mm was my only option. For the very few who are in that situation, or who live in a state where getting a new carry gun is a colossal undertaking, I'm glad that the product exists. Otherwise, I'd much rather carry a reasonably sized handgun in one of those more common non-wilderness defensive calibers.

about the 357 vs 10mm the figures are out of full length 6 in revolver at about 800ftlb. Remember 10mm does it in a shorter barreled G20. Imagine 10mm flying out similar length 6in KKM barrel in a G20 or G40, I am pretty sure 10mm will outclass 357 by a good margin.

Not 41mag, 44mag, or even 454 casull revolver can pack so much firepower

15rds in a lighter and easier to manage package, the G20 is VERY hard to beat

Yes. I carry a G20 often.

Heavy hot hardcasts in the woods. Moderate JHP in town.

I'll add to those who prefer another caliber. In my case .45 ACP. However, I would carry a 10mm IF I had one and it was the first thing to hand in such an episode. I have no intention of carrying one as a primary sidearm.

Not even in my Top 10 for EDC, although a number of 10 mils are highly desirable for use as woods guns. From a practical perspective, it would be tough to beat the Glock 40 in the woods, although I am not a fan of the styling at all. If Sig made the effort to have a double stack 10mm with their stainless + rosewood combo with 5.5 to 6" barrel, it would already be in my possession!

A recoil comparison of 10mm versus 45 from full size 1911's
10mm Handload 180 Nosler @ 1,228 fps / 603# KE - recoil energy 9.2 - PF 221
10mm Handload Nosler 150 JHP @ 1,402 fps / 655# KE - recoil energy 9.4 - PF 210
45 acp Winchester 230 Ranger T @ 915 fps / 428# KE - recoil energy 8.2 - PF 210
45 acp Remington Golden Saber 185 +P @ 1,157 fps / 550# KE - recoil energy 9.0 - PF 214

My 10mm handloads subjectively recoil about like 45 acp +P - calculations support that impression.
Yes, 10mm that is hotter can be obtained, but those loads suit me.

My next 1911 build will likely be in 10mm, and yes, I'll carry it just like I do the .45s.

Josh
